Slider wear ?

Recommended Posts

I noticed after my last jump that my slider grommets have line grooves in them. This rig has about 75 jumps since new. My question, is this normal? Would it be safe to either scotchbrite or sand out any rough spots? Should I get a new slider or have the grommets replaced? The grooves are fairly deep and I have microlines. Thanx

So this main, including lines and slider, has less than 75 jumps? Odd.

Some polishing/marking of the surface - possible with brass sliders. It's also possible that dirt has accumulated on the grommets, and that an area has been kept clean by the line motion. But deep grooves? That's a problem.

I would check:
1. Slider bumpers - dents are more likely than grooves.
2. Lines. If they're full of abrasives (sand, dirt, silt) it can wear a slider faster, but that's really rare.
3. Slider bumpers at the canopy end. They are round washers sewn into the canopy near the outer line attach points. Make sure they haven't worn through the fabric.
If it's just dirt you may get away with just cleaning the grommets. At worst you may need a new line set and a new slider, along with some new bumpers.
