helmet rating

Recommended Posts

this may seem an odd question, but i will ask it anyway. i am a road luger, and in the constant search for the perfect full faced helmet, i have wound up looking at parachute helmets. the problem is i need to know if there is a rating on them. cause i dont want to slam my head of the ground only to find out the parachute full faced helmets are crap. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Paul

Parachute helmets are designed to take the impact of a kick or a bump of heads, not the impact level you are looking at lugeing. I'd look for something with a Snell rating. Motorcycle shops would be the first place I'l look with Ski shops close behind.

I highly doubt they're rated at all. They're pretty much crap as far as "real protection" goes. They're for bumps and bruises, because the world's best helmet won't keep your neck from snapping in a bad hit.
But a heavy helmet might help snap your neck in a moderate hit.

Heh, I've got a Protech, Z1 and Arai motorcycle helmet.
Compared to the Arai, the Protech and Z1 are crap for protection. But then I can't look up at all in when I'm wearing my Arai, where my Z1 doesn't restrict my head movement one bit.

Stop in at any gear store and look at the warning label that comes on a skydiving helmet. It basically says "This helmet is not rated to protect your noggin from anything, not falling down, not walking into a tree, not bumping your head on the plane, not raindrops." On top of all this, they're amazingly expensive!
The local motorcycle shop will have a variety of helmets, that while expensive, will actually protect your brain. These helmets also come in a variety of sizes which will allow you a better fit, and therefore better protection.
