wceviper 0 #1 January 20, 2002 Hello, Recently I have learned how to pack, yesterday (Saturday) I packed 9 rigs over the course of the day. I am packing for the DZ cause I am broke and need to make extra money. Twords the end of teh day, my hands started to get really dried out, and even parts of my fingers were bleeding a bit from under my cuticle! not bad or anything, but it is enough to make me want to stop. Today I went out and packed 1 rig. then I left. What can I do to toughen my hands up more? I have heard about soaking them in salt water, and just use lotion. Any other tips out there?-Jason
riggerrob 643 #2 January 21, 2002 Neutrogena or lanolin hand lotion will relieve dry skin caused by handling nylon.Power tools will ease the strain on fingers when closing contianers.

mountainman 0 #4 January 21, 2002 Clay is right. Don't try to pull all 4 flaps together with one tug. Use it just like you do with the pull-up cords. I have been told numerous times that if you try to pull all 4 flaps together at one time, you can break the stuff in the flaps.Just be careful. Good luck too!!JumpinDuo.com...come and sign the guestbook.
scottbre 0 #5 January 21, 2002 Yea, I am still having that problem with my cuticles too. It's from putting your fingers through those tight bands to set the lines. I would also welcome suggestions on how to avoid this."Let the rabbits wear glasses. . . "

afreedman 0 #7 January 21, 2002 Hey guys don't sweat the dry hands and bloody fingers. I used to pack so I know what you are going through. This usually happens the first busy weekend back after the winter, it will go away soon, your hands will become custom to packing and you shouldn't have a problem after a couple weekends.-Adam

Deal with it for a week or so, you're hands will toughen up on their own.....use lotion often..Mike
E150 0 #9 January 21, 2002 Put tape around your fingers before you pack. My hands did the same just when I was packing my own (cc 4 times a day for 3 weeks).
riggerrob 643 #10 January 21, 2002 Good point about easing into any new task. It is just like building new muscles. Work until they are tired, then rest them so they will grow back stronger.Next weekend pack until your hands are tired. Stop before your hands start to crack and bleed. Let them heal up during the week. Repeat the process.Over time you will find your hands toughening up.If callouses start to crack, wrap them in athletic tape. You may end the weekend looking like a boxer, but your hands won't hurt.Grind down any callouses - with a pumice stone - during your days off.
