Wearing Sunglass' in Freefall???

Recommended Posts

How the hell do you keep them from flying off your face?? i see my instructors weary normal sunglass' and i have to wear those stupid goggles that fog like the window of my car on a night of sel.........never mind :)Is it safe for someone like me (15 jumps) to be wearing anything but those damn goggles? The reason i ask is b/c i hate glare, the fogging problem, and i don't want to catch Pink Eye from someone!!
I swear you must have footprints on the back of your helmet - chicagoskydiver

I've worn only sunglasses on a bunch of jumps. Get a pair of "Chums" and tighten them up before exit; the glasses won't go anywhere. They work great for plain ol' belly flyin' except if you'll be diving. I've never tried wearing them sitting, standing or head down.
Now I wear FlexZ's - they come in clear, smoke, amber and a whole bunch of other cool colors, they're small enough to work well with just about any helmet (get the minis), they're flexible so you can roll 'em up and stuff 'em in a pocket without cracking, the lenses are made of a softer, thicker plastic than Kroops or Skyeyes so they tend to not scratch as easily (and the scratches are less visible when they do). No fogging problem once I'm out of the plane; I pull them up on the top of my helmet until exit to avoid fogging in the plane.
pull and flare,

I have a really cool pair of goggles that I got for like $15 at a gear store. They look little bigger than sunglasses, and they never go anywhere. The only problem is, I have no idea what brand they are or anything...the lenses are tinted and they've never fogged on me (but Ive only used them 3 or 4 times, I have a Z1, so I really dont need them). I'll try to find the brand or something and post it back up here....

"Chums"
AKA croakies, a liitle bit of fabric that fits over the legs and fastens round your head, they have adjustable sliders to tighten them up.
Secret to not fogging is not keep your goggles clean and dry, so on jump run, don't fasten them on till the very last minute.
Blue skies, if you can see them...

I used to wear sunglasses all the time. I jumped a factory diver without the visor. With the right pair of shades, I could take the helmet off or put it on while wearing them. I didn't use a strap or anything, just a snug fitting pair of sunglasses.
But they'll get loose if you are in a steep dive, and don't take too well to sitflying either.
I think over maybe 200 jumps, I lost one contact lens and one pair of sunglasses while I was jumping. Not bad.
For now, I have the visor back in my helmet. The glare really doesn't bother me in freefall, and I keep my sunglasses in my jumpsuit so I can put them on when I land. Fogging hasn't been an issue as long as I wait til jump run to put my helmet on.
By the way, I think the very first piece of skydiving equipment I bought was goggles! Used student goggles are icky! For $15.00 you can put that whole pink eye issue to rest!
