I know, I know - it's not COOL to wear a helmet during takeoff......but think of how cool it will be when you have a massive head injury after the airplane crashes on takeoff and all those uncool people wearing helmets have their noggin in tact..

Amen. I wish more would realize this. It's a bit of a contradiction to see someone who's usually very safe (gear check on the ground, pin check on the plane, handle check on the plane) not wear a helmet during takeoff. I wish more DZs or pilots would enforce this. Finally - it's not only a matter of their personal safety - it's a matter of safety for EVERYONE on the plane. In the event of a crash an unsecured helmet is going to become a projectile, who knows what damage that might do.

I totally agree. I have a friend who is only alive today because he was wearing his helmet and seatbelt on takeoff. Plane went right off the runway, hit a bank and did a cartwheel. I also always see people taking their seatbelts off at 500 feet but if there was a problem with the plane at that altitude, you would be going down with the plane. So I always wear my seatbelt AND helmet until 1,000 - the usual cutoff point for where you'd get out in the event of an emergency. I don't give a rat's ass if anyone thinks I am "uncool." I have way too many skydives ahead of me to lose my life or my ability to jump cause I wanted to look cool.

I guess I'm totally "uncool", because I sometimes leave my helmet on the whole ride to altitude. And it is a fashion-statement Pro-Tec to boot. :S
Actually, I often find a comfortable position propping my head (in my helmet) on the top of my rig if I can lean back, or leaning propped against my arm, which is braced on the side of the plane. I half-snooze or relax from about 1000 ft. until about 10-11,000. Then it is time for another hackey and handle check before I pull my goggles down.
Even if I don't ride all the way with my helmet, it is on at least until the belts-off at 1,000 ft.

I'm with on that Jfields.....I'm a F%cking Geek!!!!!! I wear the helmut and then I HAVE to grab my handles 3 times before leaving the plane, and I mean I'll pretend to throw out the P/C, put my hands up in the air like I'm grabbing my risers and the go for the handles like I'm cutting away!!!! Probably looks goofy and I even had one guy tell me he cant touch his handles before he jumps or else hell have a bad jump! I guess I'm oppsite, but then thats my little superstition
