freeflir29 0 #1 January 14, 2002 It seems I have developed a fairly consistant right turn on opening. It's not a hard right turn but a turn none the less. About like pulling a toggle 1/2 way down maybe. My canopy has less than 150 jumps on it. It's packed indoors 99% of the time. What's up with this? I don't think the trim should be off yet but I haven't checked it. I always check my leg straps to make sure they are symetrical.....I don't know what it could be except for line trim. Any suggestions from the peanut gallery?"I got some beers....Let's Drink em!!!"Clay
TheMarshMan1 0 #2 January 14, 2002 is it only on opening?
freeflir29 0 #3 January 14, 2002 As far as I can tell. I didn't notice it any other time. "I got some beers....Let's Drink em!!!"Clay
TheMarshMan1 0 #4 January 14, 2002 Could it be packing method maybe? Probably not I guess if you havent changed the way you pack it, but I seem to be able to give myself off-heading openings on occasion just by the way I pack...
freeflir29 0 #5 January 14, 2002 I haven't changed the way I pack in the last 50 jumps. Besides...packing might give you an Off Heading opening but not a sustained turn. I think I remember a complete 360 once before I started stopping it. Maybe I've just gotten in a habit of loading that side of my harness.....I don't know...."I got some beers....Let's Drink em!!!"Clay
MarkM 0 #6 January 14, 2002 Maybe you're doing something with your body when you're deploying?Pack your rig and have a friend jump it. See if he has the same problem.
hookit 0 #7 January 14, 2002 I agree with MarkM on this one. Since it only happens on opening and not during normal flight then it's quite unlikely that the canopy is out of trim. Also, if your legstraps were uneven you would notice the turn throughout the entire flight of the canopy (unless you compensated by weighting the left hip but that's something you would consciously recognize and do). I would say you probably have a habit of placing more weight on your right hip than your left during deployment. Shifting weight in the harness during opening is commonly used to control the direction of the canopy. If, during the snivel, you see the canopy begin to turn a bit one way you can shift your weight to the opposite hip a bit to bring the canopy back to center.Blues,Trey
freeflir29 0 #8 January 14, 2002 Yeah...maybe I'll have to try to conciously shift my weight to the left side to see if that makes any difference....."I got some beers....Let's Drink em!!!"Clay
cloud9 0 #9 January 14, 2002 If you haven't done so, check your steering lines. Its possible that one is twisted up a bit. When you release the brakes it gives just enough slack to fly you straight.
freeflir29 0 #10 January 14, 2002 "check your steering lines"Checked that one already. I am going to measure them because I am wondering if they have shrunk uneavenly. It seems like they are a little shorter than they used to be but that could be my imagination..."I got some beers....Let's Drink em!!!"Clay
skygeek 0 #11 January 14, 2002 Which side are you packing the "boys" on? maybe you should try to make sure you are are equally weighted.**SHRUG**
MarkM 0 #12 January 14, 2002 Don't think the one ounce of extra weight would throw the canopy off so much.
freeflir29 0 #13 January 14, 2002 "one ounce of extra weight"Mine are about 4 lbs each. Especially after the hook I did yesterday!!! It was very sweet........."I got some beers....Let's Drink em!!!"Clay
jfields 0 #14 January 14, 2002 QuoteMine are about 4 lbs each. You definitely need to get current on your "horizontal RW". Four pounds each sounds like quite a long dry spell. Clay,Is everything symetrical on your rig when you jump? Right/Left straps equally tight, lines equal length, not leaning left or right, etc?Justin

MarkM 0 #16 January 14, 2002 "Uh.... Skygod?"Naw, if they're 4 lbs each they're probably brass or copper.Real Skygods have balls of titanium. Very little weight with those.
freeflir29 0 #17 January 14, 2002 "brass"Definately brass.......I try to keep everything even when I put the rig on. I check the leg straps but the right one always "feels" tighter. Maybe it actually is.....The canopy has also given me a couple "surge openings" It opens, surges forward a little, and then sorta stops for a second. The pilot chute dances around on top till it starts flying normal again. I'm starting to think the brake lines have shrunk a bit. That would definately cause this type of behavior."I got some beers....Let's Drink em!!!"Clay
