lippy 918 #1 December 17, 2001 Howdy all. I was soooo very excited about my first parachute which I bought two days ago. I had originally gone over it with a rigger, and was pleased with the condition of the main. Then yesterday, as I was playing with my new toy at a friends place, I noticed a tear. In the right hand end cell's crossover port there's a split in the fabric, about 2 inches long. The canopy is a Sabre 170. Is this a big problem? There's a master rigger at my DZ, will he be able to fix this? Please give me some input, I don't know what to do.Live to Jump, Pull to Live,Lippy
alan 1 #2 December 17, 2001 It is difficult to give this kind of advice without actually inspecting the canopy, but with that said, it sounds like an easy, quick, and inexpensive fix for a master rigger. You may also want to find out more about what might cause such a tear, so ask a few questions when you take it to the rigger. You did a smart thing by having a rigger go over it before you bought it, but it appears you may have also learned another lesson. Riggers can and do make mistakes and some riggers are better than others. Be picky about who you choose for a rigger.alan
johnny1488 1 #3 December 17, 2001 I thought the same thing when I was looking at my first main. Make sure it isnt the cross port. Each cell has a hole in the panel in the center of the cell to help with canopy inflation. Get it ckecked out just the same but for now but the razors and rope away!Johnny
riggerrob 643 #4 December 18, 2001 Yes, take your torn Sabre to your local Master Rigger. He will do one of two repairs. If the damage is still small, he will just recut the cross port with a hot knife. This only takes a minute, but requires an experienced hand.If the damage is larger, or close to a seam, the he/she will have to sew on a patch and that will take more like an hour and cost $20 to $40.Again, keep your shirt on. None of us can give you an exact answer without inspecting the canopy.
Tee 0 #5 December 18, 2001 ACK! That's crappy news Lippy. If Paul isn't back soon from Japan, I can always call my rigger and see if he will have time to inspect it over Christmas. Give me a call before x-mas if you want me to look into it. Tee
