Demoing the Sabre 2

Recommended Posts

Woohoo, it sure is nice jumping in Deland and just down the road from PD. I just had the itch to downsize from my Hornet 190 to a Sabre 2 170, gave them a call, and since I'm right here, and they don't have to have the time to ship it out, I was able to snag one for a day.
So, do you think I'm going to notice a huge difference between the 2 canopies? Any advice for me on how to fly it, and what I need to be looking for and feeling, to get my maximum use out of it since I only have it for one day?

Good choice and you're going to love it. Just take it easy the first time pull high and get to know the canopy somewhat better. Make a couple of flair exercise and get a feeling for the sweet spot. Going down from a 190 to a 170 you will notice a difference in turns and also in speed speed and again speed. You will loose a lot more alt. while turning so take it easy as you approach your landing spot. Just get to know this thing. Make some front riser turns - play with the brakes. You'll see, that thing seems to fly for ever. The glide is flat and perfect for a tiptoe landing. Wind or no wind doesn't matter.
I'm jumping a Spectre and just ordered a new Sabre 2 for my other rig. I've been testing the Sabre 2 now for a while and I love it.
So go out there and enjoy the ride and come back and let us know how it went.

Phil hit it right on the head. I have jumped a friends Sabre2 150 after spending 400+ on a Tri 175. Flare was the same and there is plenty. Turns were quick and steeper, very responsive canopy. The landing final approach was a lot faster, but except for the speed didn't seem much different.

What worked best for me in both a no wind and a light wind day was smooth pull all the way to stall (full flair) beginning about 10 feet. Stall actually occurred just as my feet touched down.
In a higher wind, the canopy still had good penetration into the wind and was very gentle on landing since speed was not as fast; without much difference in the flair.

Hey Andrea
The Sabre2 and the Hornet are very similar canopies. In fact if you don't pack it you most likely wont even notice the difference. Now the difference between a 190 and 170 will not be very extream. It will be a little faster nothing that will bother you. Land it just like you do your Hornet and you'll be fine. I downsized from a 170 to a 150 and no problems at all. So don't worry yourself, enjoy it you'll have a good time. By the way you might want to look at some of the comparisons of the Sabre2 and Hornet before you put out the big bucks for a PD product. I have a Hornet and I'm very pleased with it!

I keep asking people why they bother paying the extra 400+ bucks for a PD sabre 2....when my hornet acted the EXACT same as the sabre did..other than the sabre diving some more in front risers....that I didn't think was even THAT much different....
