steve1 5 #1 November 26, 2001 I was just wondering if anyone has tried using a ski helmet for jumping. Someone mentioned they may be too noisy because of the air vents. I was thinking of plugging these up with something. I'm getting tired of my old protec. I'd like to invest in a Z-1 but I don't think they are worth $250. In the olden days I had a motorcycle helmet and this was considered hot. Noone jumped without a helmet back then. I'd appreciate your opinions on this (using a ski helmet). lazerq3 0 #2 November 26, 2001 I know 2 poeple a my DZ that jump with ski helmuts. I dont know what brands they are but I do know the the one modified it to fit her protrac but the other guys I dont think one will fit into it. so thats one aspect to look at. And you metioned saying people saying that their too noisey cause of the air vents. You jump a protec. Thats got more vents than these helmuts. I dont think noise will be a problem. PhreeZone 20 #3 November 26, 2001 While they might not be the most stylish, they can work. Some of the tings to consider with all helmets is, the more something sitcks out, the easier it is to be hit by a riser. Some of the ski helmets I've seen are 2-3 inches thick, thats just begging to be hit by a riser at some point. Most camera jumpers turn their head to avoind the risers, not many places for you to go in a Ski helmet that thick. Oth the other hand, this years intermediate Style and Accuracy champ jumps in a open face Ski helmet. You might want to look fo a used Z1 and new liners for it. Good way to get one for sub $150. Just make sure what ever helmet you get, you minimize line snag points on it.I'm not sure what to put here right now.....
pdj6p 0 #4 November 27, 2001 Steve I jump with a ski/snowboard helmet it is a joffa and is working fine. It is also slimmer than a protec and the ear holes have a built in damper to close them off if you whant. The only problem I have had with it was I had to modify it a little to mount my protrack. It is also less expensive than most any other helmet I"ve seen.Don
mnischalke 0 #5 November 27, 2001 I use a ProTec Ace Snowboard helmet. It's a purple mirrored half helmet with flap covers over the ears. There are no holes, except for the one I drilled in the one flap to hear my ProTrack.I also cut off the goggle clip thingy in the back so it wouldn't snag lines.mike
maretus 0 #6 November 27, 2001 Couple guys from my home DZ jump with Boeri snowboarding helmets. Since the styrox stuffing inside the helmet is something like 3 cm's thick, these fellas bought themselves 2 sizes too small helmets and then scraped off the extra 2 cm's of stuffing. That works absolutely fine.
weid14 0 #7 November 27, 2001 If you do decide that is the way to go, remove any attachment points for goggles. These can snag lines, which would be a non-friendly scenrio.
MyUserID 0 #8 November 27, 2001 Though I dont know what brand it was, one of my fellow club members used to jump with a ski helmet until the chin strap broke during freefall and got pulled off his head.
gemini 0 #9 November 27, 2001 At least my Z1 stayed on when my chin strapped popped off! They may not be as protective in impact as a ski helmet, but they are light weight and I got mine cheap. Except for the damn liner coming unglued and a bad riser burn behind my left ear in Eloy it has been worth it. Gemini... Fear? Fear is riding the plane down ...
