mountainman 0 #1 November 17, 2001 Should I set my Protrack as SAS or TAS? I know what the difference is, but what do most people use? Thanks guys!!--------------JumpinDuo.com is here!!!
SkydiveMonkey 0 #2 November 18, 2001 I use TAS (true air speed) as it gives you your true speed through the air, whereas SAS (skydivers air speed) adjusts your speed reading to adjust for the thinner air / less drag at higher atitudes. The speed readings are relative to 4000 feet (average break off) at 7.08 degrees. SAS allows for accurate comparison of fall rates, but if you're going for speed use TAS. I think L&B say that a person in a fixed position falls at 62m/s at 10000', but only 50m/s at 3000'. SAS compensates for this. It's all in the back of manual (if you've lost it you can get it off the net). skybytch 273 #3 November 18, 2001 I use SAS. Why? I dunno.Another hot tip when you're setting it up? Choose the economy mode and save battery power.pull and flare, lisa

mountainman 0 #5 November 18, 2001 I haven't lost the manual, and I read all that cool stuff and got it all setup for my next jump. However, I was just wondering what to set it at so I can compare with other jumpers and be on the same wavelength. It seemed like the SAS was a more acturate and consistant. SkydiveMonkey 0 #6 November 18, 2001 SAS is the more accurate, but you have to make sure everyone you jump with is using the same setting, or you will have a lower speed reading than them, even if you're level all the way down. mountainman 0 #7 November 18, 2001 thanks for he advice. i'll be sure to check with the other jumpers then. i will prolly leave it on SAS then by default.later!--------------JumpinDuo.com is here!!!
Geoff 0 #8 November 18, 2001 QuoteI was just wondering what to set it at so I can compare with other jumpers I'm not convinced that the speed readings are accurate enough to compare with other jumpers at all on TAS or SAS if you have the thing mounted on your helmet. The burble just changes the pressure too much. For speed skydiving competitions, they use 2 pro-tracks mounted one on each side of the harness on the lateral webbing (I think that's the right term), and then they average the readings from the 2 units.geoff
SkydiveMonkey 0 #9 November 18, 2001 Yeah, L&B sell another 'strap' so you can mount the pro-track to your ankle where the airflow is cleanest. Throw me to the sky becuase I know I'm coming back - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Aviatrr 0 #10 November 18, 2001 Most people, in my experience, use SAS.. As geoff stated, while the Pro-Track is in your helmet the airflow is disturbed, so it doesn't give 100% accurate information.. The altitude warnings go off within 100ft, but the speeds can be fairly far off..Mike
