Xaos-21 loading

Recommended Posts

I have Jumped and am buying one at 2.1. The only thing i might be able to say about a wing loading that light, is they like to be loaded. Hah, youve heard that before. I am no help. I wouldn't go so far as to say it would be docile at that wing loading, but it wouldn't be hard to fly. The thing may be though, they do seemed to be trimmed down quite a bit, so you still may come out of the sky quicker than you are used too. I would also wonder about opening, and whether or not it would open slower or faster with a lighter load. I would tend to think slower, but that is a guess. It is hard to pass up the deal on them though, Have fun.

This is comparable to the XAOS except I believe the XAOS has lighter riser pressure and I have heard that it is trimmed a little flatter (less ground hungry than FX although still steep)
My friends were jumping my FX 109 at 1.5 and1.6. the friend who was loading higher (1.6) didn't like it because it 'was not fast enough', however he surfed it longer than his samurai.
My female friend who was previously jumping a stilleto at 1.2 and jedei at 1.3 really liked the FX at 1.5...she jumped it about a week and thought the flare was powerful, but she quickly realized it could bite you as it was fairly fast. right now she is really liking a velocity 103 (it opens softer than an FX...and I have heard the xaos does also), but she will not downsize anymore.
the thing to remember is that they are more efficient airfoils when loaded at 1.4-1.5 and higher and so they will have less drag/distortion/ and will maintain speed longer than a comparable non cross braced parachute.
So a xaos loaded at 1.4-1.5 can probably be expected to be able to come in a little faster than a regular chute, but at 1.3 it might be that the additional drag from cross bracing and material bulk may not increase performance.

One of the things to consider about jumping a cross braced canopy at a lower wing loading is that you are paying money for things you dont use. (In your case it is a shared canopy, so it may not apply). The cross bracing is used to help the canopy from deforming at high Gs (quick turns under high loading). If you dont a) load it and b) fly it with authority, you wont see any of those benefits from the crossbracing. i.e. you pay a lot of money (and suffer pack volume) for 'features' you dont use.
Crossbracing also often comes hand in hand with smaller airfoil cross-sections (i.e. designs with less lift and consequently less drag). This is to ensure there is enough speed for the speed hungry. To generate lift, you need speed on these canopies (lift goes up non-linearly with speed). So, the need to be flown with some speed to generate good lift.
