Precision half off rant

Recommended Posts

I'm just writing BS about Precision/Icarus
Some of you may know that Precision is having some sort of half off deal to boost sales of their canopies.
From what I understand you can trade in any unairworthy POS and get half off on a Xaos21 Synergy or a Nitron with restrictions on the colors.
And they are having a money back guarantee in case you don't like it (just like Icarus).
For what its worth, the only experience I have with any of those canopies is we have a Xaos 21 at the dropzone.
My two friends (limited cross brace experience) both really enjoyed it and seem to swear that it opens better than an FX. They swear it flies better also and has lower riser pressure, but....we will leave those opinions for jumpers with more experience.
I looked closely at these new lines...weird...the high modulus aramid fiber looks slicker (silkier?) than vectran and was sort of capucino colored. It seemed more flexible and did not look like there was any minute wear anywhere (this canopy only has about 60 jumps on it at ~2.5). One thing, like the labels on some other canopies the Xaos panel on the side looks like it has 2000 jumps on it already:D.
I'm not getting one but I think my friend Wane might. He can't decide on the loading as Precision is recommending higher wingloadings than most of the best canopy pilots in the world feel is most effieicent for a 21 cell cross brace(2.4 vs 2.0ish).
Maybe the stabilirib BS actually increases the theoretical aspect ratio of a 21 cell and makes it perform better...I don't know.
From what seems to be inthe rumor mill via Dan Preston and others Icarus is doing badly and Precision is bailing on them to sell these new canopies.
but also in the rumor mill is that the Canopies that came from Icarus that were inspected by Precision had quality problems...I don't know, but my FX made this January with 150 jumps on it had stitching coming apart and it was inspected by Precision...and I have heard of that before>
ok I'm done.

Rumors I've heard say that Icarus and Precision have parted ways and Precision will no longer build or distribute Icarus products. AND the design and QA problems at Icarus not only affected the Crossfire but virtually all their canopies.
Skydiving is not a static excercise with discrete predictability...

This one is the truth - got it straight from Icarus. As of right now all Icarus canopies are being manufactured in either Spain or New Zealand. If it isn't there already, there should be an announcement on their website soon.
Hadn't heard the other one...

I have had the opportunity to see a lot of Xaos canopies in action from Mikeal Stevens' 53 up to a 100. They are very competitive in the hands of experienced pilots as evidenced by Shaylan's victory at the June PPPB meet. I consider the Xaos a "better FX", but would probably wait for the 27 if I were going to jump ship and buy something other than Atair. Lots of people are already on the Xaos wagon: Rook Nelson, Andy Farrington, Andy Anderson, Shaylan, Mikeal, etc, etc.

It came from the heart, man....:D
It has been widely known that George Galloway was parting with Icarus to manufacture his own 'versions' of said canopies.
Most of the scoop in the DZ is that the worst (constructed) Icarus canopies were seen over by Precision. I was just commenting on their sort of mixed commitments and then bailing to make their own money.

My teammates and I are very anxious for the release of the Onxy, the upcoming tri-cell cross-braced Atair canopy which is very different in design than what is currently out there. We had hoped to have prototypes by The Ranch Pond Swoop Nationals, but it just wasn't to be. Another big-money project is tieing up production currently, so we will just have to wait.

we are currently designing and manufacturing gps guided parachute systems for the war effort.
i designed our sdas system (skydiving data acquisition system) to include additional outputs to auto pilot a parachute. with its built in 12 ch differential gps it can fly a parachute accurate to 2m. i started this project almost a year ago never thinking it would become so important, so fast.
sincerely,
dan
