pro Track not logging a HopnPop?

Recommended Posts

I just got a Pro Track. I figured it would accelerate my learning curve. I made my first hopnpop from 5k and the Pro Track didn't log it. It beeped on the way up and beeped once under canopy, but no joy on the jump number advance. Am I SOL on recording my next 3.5k hnp, or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!
Mike

read the manual that came with it. it explains that the protrack records after 7 seconds of FF.. but you can also change that. you have to read the manual though cause i cant remember how to do it. if you dont have your manual anymore post back and i will transcribe the directions to you from my manual.

I don't think you can reset the 7 second requirement. It's hard for these things to detect the start of freefall. In fact, several times I've had it record freefall and deployment at 13000 or so, due to the airplane making a sudden dip. It will still give you your warnings and increment your jump number, but you have to approximate and edit accumulated freefall time.
Another way to deal with this is by actually taking 7 seconds.
The only explanation I can think of for dumping so quickly on exit from 5k is that you are a recent AFF grad and are still scared of getting out that low.
So quit it. From 5k, once you are experienced, even a 20 second delay wouldn't be extreme. In your case, just relax into the relative wind, breath and count to 5, slowly, then whip it out. You'll still be subterminal and probably be under canopy by 4 grand.

ok. seems like i was a little confused. im going that you have the red/white little pamphlet.. it wont record data under 7 seconds of FF time. but it can be used for a base jump... hmmm. makes me wonder...page 45 gives the base info.
you can test jump it and see if setting it to the BASE settings found on page 46 solve your problem. but remember that you have other priorities first.. worry about if it recorded after youre safely back in the hanger..
or you could just call Larson & Brusgaard.. their customer service is legendary.. im sure you could pick their brains.
all thier contact info is in the front of the book. if anything works out please post back and let me know so when i finally get back up in the air i can use it :)

Try setting the dive type to STU or SLO.. They both use reduced rates of descent for audible warnings and data logging.. I don't know the specific requirements, but mine caught 2-3 second hop&pop's(set on the SLO mode) while doing CRW.. The main reason I used it then is because, even if you do a hop&pop at 15k, it will still set off the altitude warning when you get to your highest set warning - even under canopy.. The rest are inhibited..

I may be totally wrong on this, but I had heard from someone at my dropzone that it will record a Hop-n-pop if your exit altitude is higher than your lowest preset altitude on the audio part. I have had mine record all but one of my hop-n-pops, my lowest audio altitude is set for 2000 AGL. The one it did not record is one that I exited at 2000 AGL. Hope that helps

All,
Thanks for all the input. I took Tee's advice and just sent an email to L&B. The reply from Mads Larsen follows:
Dear Nischalke,
I am sorry that it is not clearly explained in the instruction manual, but the Pro-Track needs 6-7 sec of freefall time in order to record the jump in the logbook.
If you make Hopnpop you must afterwards manually add one jump (and a few seconds) to the totals.
Best regards,
Mads Larsen

>>Well, I guess that's that. I suppose I was asking a bit much out of it. I forgot to ask if I could program it to go pick up lunch when I'm at the DZ.
thanks again,

Mike,
I don't mean to sound critical, but I hope you are still manually logging your jumps in a book and getting signatures. While I understand it is terribly vogue to be in the digital age, if you are applying for advanced awards (gold, diamond, FF wings, etc) and ratings, then you had better have them on paper to show the BOD member who you want to sign your paperwork. Some of those guys are not going to give you credit for anything that does not have a signature (like your pro-track data), so do the right thing.

Chuck,
I would never substitute my ProTrack for my Logbook. If I get down the details in my own writing, I can figure my state of mind on each jump later on. The ProTrack can't do that. I like the idea of augmenting my Logbook with the digital stuff. In the long run, I think I will learn more by analyzing the numbers that little box spits out in relation to what I actually did and logged on specific jumps. And, the chicks dig it.
thanks,
mike
