Hooking up a Main

Recommended Posts

How easy/hard is it hook a main up to a container? I bought a container that will be here any day and I have money for a reserve or a main, I was thinking I should buy the reserve then I can rent/borrow a main for a good day of jumping until I can afford one, but I dont know how hard it would be to attach/detach to the container. Any help would be great!

If the main is on a set of risers then its a simple matter to hook it up. Do a line check and thats pretty much it on each hook up. I've done this many times with a demo canopy in less then 2 minutes.
The only problem with a main on a set of risers is you need to make sure the 3 rings are compatible. You cant hook most regular three ring risers up to a container that is made for mini rings.
If the main is not on risers.... Thats a different story. I like to hook it up to a hanging rack to ensure that the lines are straight and don't have any twists in them before I hook them up to the links. I can have a main hung, looked over and on links in about 15-20 minutes.
If its not on risers you will need to be sure to put the toggles together properly each time, you need to make sure the links are set the right way and that the slider bumpers are installed correctly before attaching it to your risers. If you are using soft links then you are better to have a rigger assist you for a couple of times till you get the hang of using them. (Slinks are the best soft links to use). You also need to hook your Dbag up properly to the main no matter what you are hooking up. Don't use the bag that comes with the canopy, use the one that was MADE for your container. That means you'll need to unhook the one that came on it and hook yours up.
I'm not sure of too many places that rent just a canopy. Most like to rent an entire system since its easier to keep track of then loose canopies. Plus they are assured that it properly fits the container and you don't have to alter it to get it to work with your system. Demo canopies are different. They come without a Dbag and most come on mini-risers to accomidate any container.
Be safe, be smooth, be fast..... and most importantly.... be phree :)

Chris,
If you show up at the dz and lay it all out in the packing area, and look confused or ask for help, someone WILL help you, and show you what you need to do. Trust me on this. If it's already on risers, it really isn't that hard, but the first few times you do it, having someone more experienced looking over your shoulder to make sure you are doing it right can't hurt. (and like Phree Zone said, most demos come with risers attached)
And of course, if you just don't want to be bothered, you can pay someone to do it for you.
My advice: Buy the reserve for now, and look for a deal on a used main canopy sized for you and your new container. (ask around the dz, look for notices on bulletin boards, and jump it a few times before you buy it) Then you can save up and buy the main you want later.
