Adding an RSL

Recommended Posts

Q for the riggers out here - how difficult (time, money, rig-specific quirks) is it to add an RSL? Say, hypothetically of course, that a friend of yours was coming to your DZ on a Saturday evening, and you required him to have an RSL on his rig before he could jump at your DZ. If he had to have it freshly installed, would he be in the air Sunday or not?

Well... lets see here. Sewing has to be don on the risers and at minium the Reserve will need temp pinned, pulled, and reset. I dont know many riggers willing to seal someone elses packjob. That means a reserve repack is probally in order too. I cant imagine its hard to do it.... just not sure why you would require it. Most people I know have uninstalled it. I doubt you can find a rigger to do that much work on a Sunday for cheap. Good luck!
Do I HAVE to do another raft dive??? :)

I think it's only a requirement for jumpers who have not completed their A-license.

I know at my DZ its only required for students. Once off student status its up to you, unless your jumping rental gear then its up to whether that rig has one or not

When you have your reserve packed next time have it put into place. You can always unhook it from the riser, but if it isn't placed around the deployment cable when the repack is done you HAVE to open he pack job. If you normally don't use it cool, but if it's a must for the one dz then your ready. Just hook it up.

The number of hours required to install an RSL varies widely depending upon whether the rig left the factory RSL-ready.
If you are lucky enough to own a rig that is RSL-ready, then it is a simple matter of temporary-pinning the reserve, removing the ripcord, routing it through the RSL and reclosing the reserve.
Mind you, most riggers are reluctant to put their seal on someone else's pack job, because they are now legally responsible for everything inside that reserve container.
If the container was not originally built for an RSL it gets far more complicated and expensive. When I worked at Rigging Innovations, it took me a minimum of half a day and $125 to sew an RSL-retrofit onto an older Talon.
If you want a rig retro-fitted with an RSL it is best to send the container - and handles - to the factory that built it. But expect it to take a few weeks unless you are willing ot pay a rush fee.
Legally, few Master Riggers - outside of factories - can retro-fit RSLs. Few of them have the patterns and even fewer of them are willing to do that major a modification.
If your rig is not longer in production, then ship it to Action Air in Davis California. Action Air has a supplementary FAA certification that allows them to retrofit an RSL to almost any container.
