Hen 0 #1 August 24, 2001 I've had a look at both of these helmets on the web, Gaths are very popular at my home DZ, But I am attracted to the Gecko because of the internal audible port (for a future purchase!). I'm still a student jumper so would like advice from more experianced folk before making my decision. Would the Gecko be a suitable mount for a dv camera in the future? I've seen cameras on Gaths though Gath do not recommend it - any input will be greatly appreciated.
OmriMon 0 #2 August 24, 2001 I never seen or heard about the Gecko before but i have owned a gath before, it's cheap, it's comfortable, it's flexible so it gives a good fit, i really liked it till i forgot to close the chin strap one day and lost it , there is couple of freeflyers at my dz that mount camers on their gath and i don't think they ever had any problems with it.So if u r looking for a good cheap helmet the gath is a good choiceFree Skies,Omri A-38593
Geoff 0 #3 August 24, 2001 I often wear a Gath, so I'm not anti, but please bear in mind that the Gath provides virtually no protection in the event of a serious impact.Geoff
maretus 0 #4 August 25, 2001 I'm a proud owner of a Gecko and I like it very much. It gives you much more protection than Gath because of the hard outer shell. The helmet is very comfotable and that internal audible port almost guarantees that you hear your audible every time. Gecko also comes with cool color options and the customer service was wery good, I ordered it via email straight from the factory. I don't own a camera but I'm confident that Gecko would be suitable to that too.
SkydiveMonkey 0 #5 August 29, 2001 I've got a gecko and if you plan to use an audible with it, i will have to be a time out (if you want it to fit in the port). I jump a pro track and have to have it in the left ear hole, but it's still very comfortable and it's a good helmet. Sew the chin strap up as well if you get one cos mine had a tendancy to come slightly loose in freefall causing the helmet to shake a bit. Don't pull low, unless you are Alex@SkydiveUPSC.com
what42 0 #6 August 30, 2001 I looked at Gecko's website and it looks interesting. I emailed them, however, and they don't export to the US. He said something about Copyright infringment. So, I guess I won't be getting one any time soon.Wesley--I'll see you at 13,5 amongst the clouds.

pyke 0 #8 August 30, 2001 I jump a Gath and love it!! It is lightweight, comfortable, and stylish! To address the issue of an impact at high speeds....only a motorcycle helmet is rated for high speed impacts...so REGARDLESS of what you have on your head at the time of a high speed impact...it won't make THAT MUCH difference. My mother worked in neurological rehabilitation for years...and from the evidence I have seen...it is as much fate as anything else. If you're gonna knock your dome...you're gonna knock it. Full face, poly-whatever, extra-strength, super-duper....don't mean SHIT!!! That thing is going to break off your head like an eggshell. NOW, conversely, impacts in the air...and some slower speed ground impacts will be GREATLY reduced by the advantages of a full face or hard-shell outer. But again...that comes up against the same argument that motorcycle riders challenge for the helmet law.My .02,Kahurangi e Mahearangi,Pyke NZPF A - 2584USPA C- ????? RemiAndKaren 0 #9 August 31, 2001 QuoteFull face, poly-whatever, extra-strength, super-duper....don't mean SHIT!!! Completely agree as far as high speed impacts go!If the speed is high enough, your neck will probably break since none of the skydiving helmets protect them in any way...I wear a full face for the odd knee/foot in the face turning points or during exits, and the practicality of it (so easy to get from standby to jump mode.... just flip the visor down...)It may help in a high speed colision or landing incident (it has helped a few people in the past who struck planes, people or ground), but one shouldnt kid oneself about it.... many more have still died in these situations...Have fun, and be safe!RemiMuff
