ojf1982 0 #1 August 7, 2001 I am relatively new to the sport i am bout to reach 50 jumps. I have been renting the gear of my dropzone Silhouette 170 ( exit weight 147) the smallest canopy they have, and have been landing on target and on my feet everytime. I have not had a bad landing since my student jumps. Can the experts out there in skydiving land give me pointers and tips on what Canopy and size to get. skybytch 273 #2 August 7, 2001 What size is easy. Either get a 170 like you are already used to or if you want something a bit faster buy a 150. You'll probably be happiest in the long run with a 150; you'd likely get bored with a 170 quickly, if you aren't already. You "could" go down to a 135, but imho you'll be safer to go a bit larger than that for your first main - remember that this is the canopy you have to land everytime, regardless of the conditions and location. Be confident that you can safely land what you buy anywhere - like into someone's backyard cuz Joe can't spot....Which canopy is the hard one...This is not a complete list, just a few canopies suitable for a novice that I am familiar with. Personally I love the Spectre - soft, slow, on heading openings, quick turns, easy to land, fun to fly. Others to consider include the Triathlon, Sabre, or if you are looking for a bit more performance a Sabre2 or Safire. Best way to decide which is for you? Jump as many as you can before buying. PD will send you a Spectre, Sabre or (in the near future... not available right now) a Sabre2 to jump for a couple of weekends. Icarus has "demo centers" around the world that have Safires available to demo. AR will send you a Triathlon to fly for a couple of weekends. If you can travel, a trip to a large dz (like Perris or Eloy) or a large boogie is a great idea - you can check out a number of different mains in one weekend in one place. If you're demoing at your home dz, start with a mellow 150 - a Tri, Sabre or Spectre - do 5 - 10 jumps on it. If that's too fast, you know that a 170 is a better choice for you right now. If you like the 150 but still want a bit more performance, jump a Sabre2 or Safire in the same size. If you are demoing at a different dz or at a boogie, start with a 170 - you are in a new environment, don't add too many new things to any one skydive.Good luck!pull and flare,lisa----I am a nobody.
