Geoff 0 #1 July 2, 2001 I seem to remember a comment that the Cobalt opens beatifully slowly when opened at high speed.I vaguely remember Dan advising to deploy in a track for the best openings. (I'm sure you'll put me right if that's not correct!)So the obvious question: what happens with a low speed deployment - a hop n pop, or a light jumper on their belly in a baggy suit ? Will I get spanked?Of course I should get a demo, but they don't seem to be available yet in the UK.Thanks for any feedback - Dan? Chuck? anyone more ..er... objective?Geoff
ramon 0 #2 July 2, 2001 When I open my Alpha (precursor to Cobalt) at subterminal speeds it opens very slowly and tends to fly itself, based on body position, while opening longer. I am failry certain that a cobalt opens very similarly. For me this increases the chance of off heading openings and I only do it on corss country canopy rides. If I do a hopn' pop at 4000' I do about a 10s delay, If I do one from 3000 I delay about 3-4 s and hope for a good opening bloo onesramon
SkymonkeyONE 4 #3 July 3, 2001 My Cobalts open fine in a hop and pop mode. I don't pack any differently for it and I have never experienced any line twists. I have had 90-degree off heading openings every once in a while, but that is not the norm. I haven't ever been spanked either. The openings seem to me to be exactly like most any other main I have done short delays with. One critical thing to remember with eliptical mains is that you must remain straight in the harness to avoid twists (not that I have ever had one spin up on me). I always check my canopy by looking straight over my head, not to the side. This was WAY more critical when I was jumping a VX or a Stiletto. It is very hard to screw up a Cobalt opening.Chuck
cobaltdan 0 #4 July 4, 2001 cobalts will open slightly brisker at slower speeds than higher speeds.......to a point...ie. looking at dataloger graphs a deployment at 140 is softer than 120, but if you dump right out the door you are signifigantly slower and with the smaller pilit chute we reccomend it will take a few additional seconds.i have no problems hop&poping from 3k but i do not go for 2k cobalt hop and pops.sincerely, danatair
