freeflygoddess 0 #1 May 14, 2004 Hey I liked seeing the threads I replied to, and I still have that option marked yes on my settings, but I am no longer seeing the checkmarks...is it broken or am I going green blind...meaning I can't see green anymore...which could be true, since I am broke and have two little ones coming that will completely bankrupt me...lol... sangiro 26 #3 May 15, 2004 I shut them off for a while. I'm looking into why the performance of the site has degraded over the last few weeks. (should be much faster again now) I suspect the little checkmarks, amongst other things, were killing the server. There's a lot of work that that needs to be done by the server just to generate one checkmark. Every time a page is viewed the script hads to run though every post, on every thread in on that page to check for your name. Some threads have thousands of posts to them. Can you imagine how often people flip back to the forum view page.... every time that happens this whole process has to repeat itself. Not very optimal and very little value add.Safe swoops Sangiro
Gawain 0 #4 May 15, 2004 I was hoping it had nothing to do with my stupid little "poll" at the "bonfire". I have noticed that there have been significantly less "proxy errors" and "blank page loads" just the past day.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! QuoteI have noticed that there have been significantly less "proxy errors" and "blank page loads" just the past day. I think this is due to some other changes we've made. Found a template that was not being cached. This will certainly improve the performance as well (and is how we found it), but it can also quite possibly be the culprit that caused the blank page loads. The proxy errors happens when the server is overloaded. That's usually a symptom of all these other things that we're trying to fix. apoil 0 #8 May 19, 2004 QuoteCan you imagine how often people flip back to the forum view page.... every time that happens this whole process has to repeat itself. Not very optimal and very little value add. It adds a tremendous amount of value. It's one thing to see which threads I've viewed, but it's hard sometimes to keep track of the ones I've actually posted to. Granted, if the current implementation is inefficient, don't leave it on, but there has to be a simpler way to build an index of the threads a user has posted to. It can even be stored on the users side with a cookie. That way the server doesn't have to do anything. Sure there's thousands of posts to search through, but the number of posts made is comparatively small.
nacmacfeegle 0 #9 June 1, 2004 "I shut them off for a while." Feedback? For what its worth, I don't really think this feature brought an awful lot of value, and may even lead to a type of post whoring, "how many ticks have you got?" kinda thing. A neat toy, certainly, but I'd file it as an itch to scratch, as opposed to a much needed improvement. "It's one thing to see which threads I've viewed, but it's hard sometimes to keep track of the ones I've actually posted to" You can always search your own posts by clicking on your own profile and hitting 'show all user's posts'. Useful on those really long threads where you may have more than one thing to say, or are busy doing multiple replies eg topical threads.-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. diverdriver 6 #10 June 11, 2004 I actually did like having the checkmarks. Now that I don't view the forums as much I don't remember what the thread titles were that I posted on soooooo...it was a nice feature but hey, performance of the site has to come first. Thanks for the work HH. Suggestion: Could the tick marks be turned on ONLY in the topical forums or does it have to be in all of them? Since there are fewer posts in each thread in the topical forums (mostly) it might not effect the server as much? Just my uneducated but definitely opinionated $.02.Chris Schindler www.diverdriver.com ATP/D-19012 FB #4125

I'll look into that. I think the code for the checkmarks needs to be optimaized a little though... regardless of where I use them in the future.Safe swoops Sangiro
