Hoisting the Colors . . .

Recommended Posts

On another forum I frequent each post is accompanied by a small flag representing the poster's country. Since dz.com is so international I'm wondering if it might be a good idea here.

It would avoid some confusion and misunderstandings and eventually persuade even the most jingoistic that they are conversing with the world . . .

Oh man that would be a good idea! Needless to say, but some discussions get weird because we don't realize what countries each other is in and the different rules in each country regulating jumping.

In general I think that's a good idea. Some thoughts on the specifics...

Some of the information over <--- there is clearly pulled from your profile. It probably shouldn't be hard to include the country listed in one's profile as a text field over there. It wouldn't be as eye-catching as a flag, but it'd be a start.

Also, the thing you probably really want to know is what licensing organization (and hence which ruleset) somebody is talking about, which is not necessarily the national licensing organization of the poster's country. Most of the time it is but sometimes it's not. It seems like the people who usually don't state what part of the world they are talking about are the people that are new to the forums, and in a lot of those cases, assuming that they're talking about the national organization in their country is correct.

Some people might get annoyed if "their" flag isn't available in the list - you have to choose somebody's list of what is and isn't a country when you're setting up the flag graphics, and invariably you'll leave someone out.

I don't look in Speakers' Corner much at all, but I think having the flags displayed in there could go either way. It could help people realize that they're hearing viewpoints from all over the world, or it could lead to statements like "you're from country X so you clearly don't know what you're talking about". In other words, the flags might get enabled on a forum-by-forum basis instead of globally.
