Adding prices to gear reviews

Recommended Posts

On this site I saw what I think would be a great idea for the gear reviews here...

When someone reviews a piece of equipment, they can enter the price that they paid for the item (in USD, us Aussies and everyone else can work out the conversions) or leave it as not indicated, and under the main description of the item it should give an average price that people paid for that item. (example here)

I believe this would be a valuable addition to the system, allowing people to get a ballpark figure of how much they could expect to pay for a similar item. I know I found it very handy at the site i'm referencing from.

Would anyone care to comment on this? Approve or disapprove?

It could be useful, but then someone that paid $500 for a canopy that needed relined in the next 50 jumps (with a cost of over $200) throws the numbers off (do they put in 500 or 700?). Different size canopies have different markets and therfore different prices. Something common like a 150 or 170 will sell faster then a 97 or a 260 so those people can ask a bit more and get it. Same thing with colors, if its all pink or a ugly color scheme they may have to knock a lot off the price to sell it and then the buyer will just put in a lower number then a different canopy would have sold for. A jumper with a canopy from the desert in Cali or AZ will have a canopy that shows more wear then someone elsewhere and thats in pricing too. The overall effect is that with the large number of possibilities, and the small sampling of transactions even a few transacrions like the ones I just listed can severly skew the numbers.

I could see new jumpers trying to use this as a pricing page and then get into situations that would be best served by talking to a loacl dealer about the specific canopy and working out the situation that way.
Yesterday is history
And tomorrow is a mystery

I knew canopies and containers would vary a great deal, however I think the idea definitely has merit for other gear like alti's, helmets, goggles, etc. Those things which prices aren't going to fluctuate too greatly due to colours and size.

Thanks for raising the point tho Phree ;)
