quade 4 #1 January 21, 2003 Ok, now I'm just being a selfish wanker, but it sure would be ultra-cool if there was someway to get WAP access into the forums. I can kinda get to the index page using the Google.com on-the-fly WAP translator, but there's no way to login that works.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
ernokaikkonen 0 #2 January 22, 2003 I'd have no use for a WAP-version, but I've been thinking it would be nice to have a "light" html-version of the forums for slow connections(including GPRS and other mobile connections). The forum-view page for Talkback, for example, was 58kb when I just checked it(without pictures), when the actual information on the page would fit in less than 10kb. Actually the information fits in 1827 bytes, but with basic formatting the size of the page would still be notably less than 10kb. The page showing the "Space exploration"-thread was 136kb, the actual text was 32kb, so I think it would fit under 50kb with just basic formatting. Maybe there is some solution that could be used for both. A dz.com "light" version that could be accessed via the goolge.com WAP translator. In the "light" version, maybe all graphics could be suppressed unless specifically clicked on. My -guess- is that the site would look pretty plain and that HH wouldn't go for it though. I could swear the "light" version has been talked about before and was rejected on those grounds. A WAP version, on the other hand, would be an added value and certainly set dz.com apart from 99% of everything on the web. quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
AggieDave 6 #4 January 22, 2003 I'm sorry, but when I first saw the subject, I wasn't really thinking about computers and instantly thought it was some sort of racial joke...if you read it in that context, the thread actually becomes fairly funny, in a bad, not the kind of humor you're supposed to enjoy way. Ok, I'll go away now...--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

AndyMan 7 #6 January 22, 2003 QuoteMaybe there is some solution that could be used for both. A dz.com "light" version that could be accessed via the goolge.com WAP translator I've got a better idea. RSS is a XML based protocol initially developed for newsfeeds, but is now being used by a multitude of forums, blogs, and general interest websites. RSS news readers reassemble the xml into a format specific to whatever platform your on. For example, go to http://www.livejournal.com/users/wilwheaton, what your seeing is actually an RSS newsfeed of wil's blog on his own website at www.wilwheaton.net. Yes, he really is that much of a dork. RSS newsreaders exist for pretty much every mobile platform, and are ideally suited for this purpose. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. AndyMan 7 #8 January 23, 2003 QuoteIncluding my SE T68i mobile phone? Sort of. There's RSS to WAP converters. RSS is just data, after all - and WAP is just formatted data. In case of your phone, the convertor wouldn't run on your phone, but on a webserver that serves up WAP pages. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. That's why I have a Samsung S105. It has 65K colors, runs midlets (Java apps), and I have a sweet web browser that I use on it that will work on the forums.KrisSky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
