whice sport is more dangerous

Ok, I'll bite.

I'll say wind tunnel, provided I can say when it's an enclosed design, and the flyers are somewhat experienced skydivers.

Mind if I ask why? A quick search didn't find much in the way of serious tunnel injuries. I can think of a few ways that a serious injury could occur, but I'm sure you [and your tunnel experience] could clarify better than I could guess.
I really don't know what I'm talking about.

wait until vt1977 or gremlin see this thread - they have a nice story of a broken neck in a wind tunnel.

I would have thought one of the reasons why there are fewer injuries is because of the tunnelrats. No matter how experienced you are, there is always an instructor standing at the door to come and get you if somethings isn't going too well. In skydiving you no longer have an instructor with you once you get your A-licence.

Well I say the enclosed design because it's what I'm familiar with, and experience skydivers because some of them are the ones that are most likely to think "yeah, I can do that".

The tunnel is fun, but not a forgiving environment. I've seen and heard of some of the worlds best skydivers hurting themselves. The best thing to do is respect the fact that it ain't the same as skydiving, and just as you'd respect a new sport you were learning (say SCUBA for example) and what that instructor had to offer in the way of information, and limitations.

When everything goes right the tunnel is great, but the walls are hard, and the wind stops at the doorway, and when you drive hard and out of control into one, flop head down the wall getting no lift, screaming towards the steel net you'll be happy you have a trained instructor who's committed themselves to step into harm's way to try to protect you. Oh yeah, try to smile on the way down.:P

So, when the instructor for your first tunnel session asks you to show him/her a controlled series of maneuvers on your belly before you freefly, understand it's for you and their safety, because even one of the worlds best freeflyers (some say the father) or even a member of one of the best RW teams in the world is at just as much risk of, oh....say breaking an arm, as anyone else.B|

Instructors (sometimes called tunnel rats) have a tough job, are in the air daily in any type of weather conditions, often not appreciated, respected, or initialy listened to. When one of the worlds best is your tunnel coach, sometimes it's hard to pay attention to the tunnel rat asking you to make sure your pockets are empty, or briefing you on saftey in the tunnel. Sometimes a coach will tell you to do something the Instructor finds unsafe, or beyond your current tunnel skill level, and the coach can get away with that, because they ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR SAFTEY. Please understand that the instructor is not trying to be a heavy handed jerk for stopping you, or asking you to slow down, but looking out for your, their, and the coaches saftey. Instructors train constantly to make saves, and believe me that training is NOT gentle!:o

Tunnel instructors get their greatest reward when they see their happy customers walk out of the tunnel excited, and eager to return/ Their worst moments are when someone has been scared, or worse, hurt, and has had a negative experience. We get the pleasure of working with everyone from wuffos to the worlds best, 5 year olds to 80 year olds. We get to pick up tips from coaches, learn more about body flight by watching people in a month than someone would in 2 years as an AFF instructor, and share that knowledge with people. We get to meet people from all across the world, make friendships, share experiences, and oh yeah.......sometimes we get to fly a little too.....;)
