matereti 0 #1 October 16, 2005 During our spring visit to tunnel I've noticed that Italian team KIAI had small harness over their suits (type you have when you go rock climbing). Was wondering why? Now when I look at my new suit I've noticed that my torso part on the suit is longer than my torso. So technically when I don't have my rig on I have a lot of loose material in crouch area & my booties are little bit to loose. Should I get one of those harnesses? Or even maybe the whole body harness like in construction?
matthewcline 0 #2 October 16, 2005 You answered your "Why are they..." question, they are wearing the harness to take up the suits "slack" which is evedent on some with out the rig on. The other question I guess would depend on how much time in the tunnel you plan on spending. An Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! Some tunnels have harnesses for you to use as well.....---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. skykittykat 0 #4 October 17, 2005 Some people use harnesses so that it gives a feeling of "wearing something" in the tunnel that is more akin to skydiving (hey, there are even "tunnel rigs" that people use). Flying in the tunnel is harder than in the air. The air is soupier and is not always constant and any little change in flying position shows up more in the tunnel than in the air - which is why it is such a great tool! Some people wear more lead in a tunnel than they would in the air, but I suppose that is because they don't have their full exit weight on! I wouldn't worry too much about it all and generally suits are made to allow for the fitting of a rig/harness with the give and take of movement. While there is that, the benifits really are out weighed by the hassle. Tunnel rigs are not too common anyway. QuoteSome people wear more lead in a tunnel than they would in the air, but I suppose that is because they don't have their full exit weight on! Some people DO wear more lead, but rarely need to. Non-experience tunnel flyers often forget that the speed of the tunnel can be adjusted easily. A small amount of weight is great to take the edge of the strain of arching for the extended periods a tunnel session can produce. QuoteI wouldn't worry too much about it all and generally suits are made to allow for the fitting of a rig/harness with the give and take of movement. A proper fitting suit shouldn't make you look like MC Hammer with the droopy drawers. Suits with torsos that are to long can often end up having legs that are far too short when the rig is on. Not good.... (PS not trying to diaagree for the sake of disagreeing, but after 4 years working for a Jumpsuit manufacturer, and being a tunnel instructor I've noticed a couple things.)---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. matereti 0 #6 October 17, 2005 Thanks for your impute guys. Here is some more info: Suit is made for me and it fits me really good except that torso part. In the air I don't have any complains about it. I've made some 140 training jumps in it with my team. But I've noticed that slack on the material which I didn't have on my previous suit. This tunnel trip will be the first time I will use a new suit in the tunnel. I have some 12 hours of tunnel time so far and my only concern is will I feal the difference or not. And if I will should I get that harness or not?
Paige 0 #7 October 17, 2005 In Orlando we have harnesses to use so you wouldn't have to buy one. Can't speak for the other tunnels.Tunnel Pink Mafia Delegate www.TunnelPinkMafia.com

Paige 0 #9 October 17, 2005 Quote Great, We are coming to Orlando November 5-6. Who should I ask about harness ? Ask your instructor if you can try on a harness to see what its like. You might find that it won't be beneficial because of fit or your comfort level. I've usually seen a harness worn with freefly suits to keep the drag/fabric under control (ie not smacking your face). Ask them any questions you may have, the staff is the best around.
