Wind Tunnel in Colorado

Just to keep this thread going, what does everyone think is most important deciding factor when picking which tunnel to spend your $$$?

A) good location (restaurants and stuff to do nearby)
B) state-of-the-art technology (constant temperature, etc.)
C) fun, passionate staff (awesome instructors, excellent customer service)

Well... I just got back from a trip to a tunnel... Spent a few hours flying 4way this trip, but have many more hours in the tunnel than I do in the actual air now. I have thought, "wouldn't it be cool if a tunnel had..." Here is my "wouldn't it be cool list...."

1) Plenty of room in the tunnel waiting area (the area inside the tunnel airlock) to dirt dive a four way while you are out for your 2 minutes between sessions... Practicing blocks was entertaining with one person standing on the bench.:$ Perhaps a shorter bench so there is an area to stand without blocking the door??? We stood by the door, but even there it was tight and we were in the way of anyone trying to get out...

2) Consistent airspeed for each group... Perhaps a meter you can see so so you know what to ask for, especially when you find a speed that is optimal for the group.

3) A stable video system (DVD recorders) and team rooms to view them. Eloy upgraded their recorders from Sony to I think Pioneer, and guess what, the DVDs actually play in my computer now too! (The Sony DVDs were glitchy at best on a PC, some players would not work with the menus, and others would not allow fast forward or rewind...) Whatever model they now use are super cool for interface.

4) More than one angle of cameras on the video system. Sometimes a straight on is better than from above to see things like arch and body position. With DVD technology, you can have more than one angle, so if any recorder would allow that, that would be even more cool. With cameras so small (not to disturb airflow), why not string one below the net center looking up??? Not that the looking up angle is needed, but it could be a fun perspective...

5) A mirror in the tunnel, so you can look at yourself and see what your body position looks like real time.

6) A water cooler for hydration.

7) A good collection of dry erase boards and markers so you can write down your dives/drills. With permanent marker, put a date and time box on the top so other people know not to take your board and use it. "Team X, 8:30 AM, 12/29"

8) Plenty of shelving to put down your gear.

9) Good collection of creepers and a painted circle on the floor the size of the tunnel. A "X" griding the circle into 4 quadrants would help lining up 4 way formations so those learning the basics can see where the center of the formation should be and know if their turns are on center and 90 degrees. Also paint in the doors so when you are doing 4way you can dirt dive where to go when you enter the tunnel so you don't spend 5 seconds getting everyone to their slot. (not that you need to paint the doors to do it, but why not)

10) A count down clock till the next session. When the tunnel is running a few minutes behind or early, you don't know when to gear up... Wouldn't be that hard to have a clock that counts down from 60 minutes or whatever the planned session is. Start it at the beginning of the purchased block of time, and the people in the tunnel would also know what they have left.

11 - Paint the I-beams between the glass different colors... Coaches will often try to line up their students for the best camera shot and/or the safest place away from doors... It would be so cool to say, "face the yellow beam" instead of "face that way" which yields less than accurate results. Or maybe painted numbers? "Face the 1", "slide slide between 1 and 4"

Anyway, just my ideas...

Hang out?! I hope you're going to be flying with us.

I've been slacking on pictures, here at some from Friday.

I think the Eloy tunnel has spoiled me, so SVC should upgrade to a 14 footer;) that would be super

Okay, but that means just waiting longer;) Besides, if you're really good you don't need the extra 2 inches:ph34r: (I've flown in the Eloy tunnel, and didn't really need that extra space)

SVC will be nice and warm, no matter the weather outside, and no dust or rain to deal with :)

Dan - please note. If you turned in place you wouldn't have shoved me into the wall. I can take a lot, but 200lbs of solid muscle beats even me and I can absorb A LOT after being a zipper off the base on the 151 way Women's World Record.

Saying that, I did get a lot of satisfaction from flying you around perfectly on the Zig-Zag Marquis' we didB|

A kegorator for hydration (-:

There's an idea, just install a tap in the debriefing room. Maybe hire a full-time bartender to serve drinks after flying. Talk about a revenue booster. ;)

Glass and parking lot looks fantastic, it's gettin' there!

Nice Ideas

[1) Plenty of room in the tunnel airlock to dirt dive - Nice, hard to do though, I'd think.

2) Consistent airspeed for each group - ??. Fan settings ID'd for groups? Some do that for camps.

3) A stable video system (DVD recorders) and team rooms - that's two things. Team rooms are kind of a luxury. But I suspect most have debrief areas

4) More than one angle of cameras on the video system - nice

5) A mirror in the tunnel, - always

6) A water cooler for hydration - YES, and it feeds into the waiting chamber directly. Finding out how to do that without loose cups is not easy. We just bring a case of bottled water and take in a couple bottles each session

7) A good collection of dry erase boards and markers so you can write down your dives/drills. - something directly inside the waiting chamber, tied down. So you can change things on the fly

8) Plenty of shelving to put down your gear. - LOCKERS everywhere, especially in the pre-staging area. This is my biggest issue at SVO, just laying stuff on the floor wherever you can stinks. I'd also like to have the option to lock my stuff up too and still have it handy.

9) Good collection of creepers and a painted circle on the floor the size of the tunnel. A "X" ....doors - OF COURSE, why isn't this obvious?

10) A count down clock till the next session. - interesting, most of the time this is called the 'clock'. But maybe a board showing 'manifest' in the waiting areas and the pre-staging area. Even nicer if it's electronic and run from the office.

11 - Paint the I-beams between the glass different colors... - very cool idea

I'll add 12 - A toilet or drain right up at the waiting area just outside the tunnel. Don't you hate having to run down/out to the main office right before the flight? (I've only been at SVO, I'm not sure which other sites already do many of the above ideas.)

Hey Mary - 8-sided chamber....or am I seeing the pics wrong and it's a 10....

Is the 12 foot dimension measured flat to flat or corner to corner? I'm wondering if it will feel tighter or more open than SVO with a 4-way.....

Orlando is a 12 sided - But I don't know how that is measured either...
What's the Perris tunnel (pics look 10 sided), flat or corner measure
(Eloy is round, 12 "panels", so measuring flat vs corner doesn't apply)

I assume when they mean 'radius' that they mean a corner to corner measure. If I'm wrong though, then I'm doing a disservice to the tunnels space available.

Answers are from Hooknswoop (Derek)

The tunnel in CO does have 8 sides but the panels are larger than the ones in Orlando.

Derek says it's measured flat to flat, and it is definately bigger than orlando. It will feel more open than orlando because there are less panels.

Oh and you will be happy to know the bathroom is just down one set of stairs it's no big deal to get to between sessions. ;)
