The benefit of tunnel time with a coach...Priceless

Recommended Posts

It's not news that doing time in the tunnel is a bit expensive. Some of us can not afford to attend a coached tunnel camp, but want to do a small block of time. If you are planning a trip to the tunnel, I would HIGHLY recommend hiring a coach to go with you to maximize the benefit of your time there.

I feel incredibly fortunate because I had an opportunity to spend time in the tunnel with Ron. Even before we got there, Ron was working for us. He was already overcommitted, but he got us in to the tunnel.

I needed a coach that wouldn't get frustrated with me. With less than 9 minutes of freefall time, I've had very little practice. My time was booked in a block with a group of very experienced skydivers, and I was intimidated by this.

I went to the tunnel because I wanted to develop some freefall confidence, and to learn skills that would be useful in obtaining my license. Basic stuff really. The other skydivers were there to work on some pretty advanced maneuvers.

Ron met with me beforehand. We discussed how to enter the tunnel, body position, and our goals for the day. After the first session, we spent time debriefing before entering the tunnel for the second session.

My first couple of minutes in the tunnel were challenging - remember your first skydive? It's not natural to be falling through the air. After I got used to being in the tunnel, Ron was able to work with me. He taught me to make subtle movements to adjust my body position.

By the end of my second session, we were playing follow the leader. I was able to change my fall rate, control my heading, move forward and backward, make turns, and even do some side slides.

What was the best part of my tunnel time? Sharing this experience with someone that enjoyed teaching me. Have you ever had a teacher that has all the right credentials, but didn't enjoy his work? It sucks.

Ron has all the right stuff. He's talented, and he has people skills. If you have an opportunity to work with him, it will be worth every penny. I made an incredible amount of progress in a short period of time, and had fun too! I can't wait to go back. Hopefully next time, I'll be able to participate in a camp.

If you'd like additional information about tunnel time with Ron, you can reach him by PM or E-Mail: Ron(at)Dropzone.com.

See I must have people skills if you love me;)

But all she said was "He has people skills"....They could be *bad* people skills.:P

Let me rephrase that...

Ron has phenomenal people skills. ;)

Still could read as phenominally 'bad' people skills.:P

Maybe so, but he's not the designated 'rap-master' of the group.:S

We had extremely high quality coaching. That the coaches were also decent people and fun to hang with was a big bonus, though.

Just so there is no room left for misinterpretation, let me elaborate:

Ron has wonderful people skills.

Ron is benignant, compassionate, personable, and insightful.

He was the perfect coach for for me - a skydiving abecedarian.

Basically, he laughed with me - not at me :)

benignant (adjective) - Kind, especially to subordinates or inferiors

compassionate (adjective) - Kind-hearted (showing compassion)

Personable (adjective) - Pleasing in personality (or attractive ;)

Insightful (adjective) - Perceptive, smart, intuitive

Me - abecedarian (noun) - A beginner in any field of learning

Nothing embarrassing or insulting here....yet.

I'm sure I could come up with a couple of adjectives to turn your cheeks pink ;)

By the way, the vocabulary quiz is on Wednesday...make sure you all study :)

Wish I could tell ya Ron! I'd have to consult Webster :D

I'm glad the coaching is going well for you. Sounds like you are a great coach with mostly good qualities. I'll pass judgement once I know what that word means :D. Hopefully, I'll see ya over at the tunnel sometime. I'm a much better tunnel flyer than skydiver at this point. You should come fly with us.

I just started coaching freefly in the tunnel:):D

If this is going to turn into a everybody loves Ron thread, shouldn't it be in the Bonfire? Frankly, I think he's a smart ass. :D

I don't teach the alphabet very well. I can only get to "Q", and I never remember "I";)

I just started coaching freefly in the tunnel, thought you would get a kick out of that.

I know, and I do get a kick out of it.

I also wanted to ask you for some tips and tricks that you wish you had known as you started coaching that you didn't learn till later on?

Trust me there is nothing I can teach you about FF.

The only advice I can give is to give a GOOD brief before...I see some coaches that try to just do it all in the tunnel....I think that just wastes the students time...Let them know what they need to do before the fans start.

I'd rather give a good pre-brief, and less of a de-brief than the other way around.

You don't need to watch the *whole* session in the debrief. Remember the good points and the areas of improvement and go to those. You don't need to see 100 great turns and keep saying "great turn" after each one.

As for freefly...I have no clue....really no clue.

I did get a MAJOR complement...One of the rats asked me to teach him how to turn. When he asked me I was like "You are kidding right? Wheres the camera?"

I was more wondering less about freefly stuff and exactly what you elaborated on, thank you. My theory is if I don't go over it on the ground, I don't do it in the tunnel without a prebrief in the chamber or something. I know Ari and I would have a hard time doing that and I would get so frustrated even though I could fly, I just couldn't understand. That is my big pet peeve.

Thanks for the advice. I should get out to z-hills and jump with you. I had discussed this with Vinny but maybe you could come along too! Ari and I in our tunnel suits and you guys on your belly?!?!?!?! Line us up nice in a row and get some good pics. Ahhhh, the beautiful fusion of tunnel and sky. :D:D:D
