steveorino 7 #1 September 10, 2007 Great tandem with big student 190 lbs. On heading deployment. However, immediately I was put into a violent spin to the right on the Icarus canopy. I looked up and cleared the toggles but didn't see anything unusual except we were spinning fast!!! I may have missed something as fast as we were spinning though. Faster than I have ever gone on a tandem even with the hardest of turns. In fact it felt like I was spinning my Stiletto. I chopped at 3.2K Canopy & free bag was easily found (good spot ) and was inspected for broken lines. We did not find anything obvious. We will look carefully at the lines to see if there are burns as we reattached main Any ideas what could have caused that? Wouldn't tension knots still be on the lines or would cutting it away allow them to work free? steveOrino
darkwing 5 #2 September 10, 2007 both tension knots and line overs can leave no trace on inspection after cutaway. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
steveorino 7 #3 September 10, 2007 I'm pretty sure it wasn't a line over as the canopy looked normal ... sortof. Would the tension knots still be in the lines? Would tension knots leave "burn/friction" marks on the lines themselves? steveOrino

tdog 0 #5 September 10, 2007 I had tension knots on a troll 290 sqft canopy with fat dacron lines on a hopnpop between the most inner and 3rd brake line above the cascade about 8 inches from the canopy tail. Chopped in a spin. Canopy landed in a tangled mess, but the offending knot was completely gone, no visible marks, and I knew exactly where to look. skybytch 273 #7 September 10, 2007 QuoteI'm not sure. I'll ask Spanky Reason for asking - a dz near me replaced the lines on all their tandem mains early this year. They haven't had a tandem cutaway since - and that includes the busy summer season when they would normally have two or three chops due to "tension knots" per month. Andrewwhyte 1 #8 September 10, 2007 The only violent mal I have ever had on a tandem was on a 2nd or third jump SET 400. Upon inspection Riggerrob found kinks in two adjacent lines which in his opinion pointed to a tension knot. I think they were easier to see because he lines were new but you could have a look if the canopy is still in the loft.
camamel 0 #9 September 10, 2007 A tension knot can do that. When you release the brakes one toggle will be completly loose in that case. What we do here is we pull the same side back riser as low as possible and the let it go. It takes only 2 or 3 sec and in 50% of the cases it clear the mal. To avoid thoses tension knots it is very important to untwist the controls lines on a regular basis. RichardWhen you think you're good...this is when you become dangerous.
