Videos of bad AFF jumps?

Recommended Posts

Rick Horn had a video called "Students at Play" he used in his AFF cert courses, and Perris had an annual "Student Bloopers" video. Nothing very gory on either one, except on Rick's tape you get to see a student breaking my arm on an AFF jump, and both are educational. However, the advent of video TV shows means these are kept out of the mainstream as they would be presented without the proper context.

If I ever saw myself on "Maximum Exposure" with that moron narrator going, "Dude, that's gotta hurt," I'd have to find him and punch him in the nose . . .

Also, when the time comes for your own AFF cert course (if you are leaning that way) find an expereinced evaluator to pre-course you. He/she will have tons of video from past courses.

Your looking at it now may be entertaining but it would also be without the right context.

I don't have bandwidth to download movies. I keep hearing about Scott Lutz. Can anyone give me a synopsis?

The dive goes fine until pull time. The main-side leads Lutz's hand to the ripcord, but Lutz decides that the JM is wrong and the cutaway handle is the correct one to pull. Main JM dumps the main as soon as the cutaway handle has been pulled, but the reserve side JM takes this as a standard deployment and turns to track. The D-bag lifts away but the RSL detaches. Lutz goes unstable and ends up on his back. Main-side JM and camera fly down to Lutz signaling for a reserve pull. He finally pulls it... and proceeds to land in power lines.

The rig uses a rip cord instead of a throw-out. AADs were on the main instead of the reserve back then. The RSLs were similar to those on sport rigs and were easily disconnected [vs. the student RSLs of today which require a wrench to disconnect]. I'm not sure if it disconnected or snapped, though.

The jump took place at Perris. Moley was main side. The best [worst] part about the video is Lutz's commentary. He does not accept blame for the jump going poorly and puts it on the equipment/his instructors. Thankfully, he never jumped again.
I really don't know what I'm talking about.

I've heard stories... and thought they where false, but this is just well beyound me. That dude needs help.

Did lutz pull the cutaway handle? I didnt see him pull it, but its beyound me why a parachute would detach like that.

Also, no RSL? Or was this pre-RSL days. Thats just weird.

Shit Happens up there, even wierd shit I guess.. as far as for landing in power lines next to an open field.. wow.

I'm curious about this statement. I've only ever seen RSL's with snap shackles; a master rigger I know says he's seen them attached with rapide links but it's not real common.

What brand rigs are the RSL's you are talking about on? Was that a factory installation or something that was done by the dzo/local rigger?

I personally could not tell you who installed them, but the Icons and Javelins I jumped during my AFF progression @ Perris all used rapide links to attach the RSL to the riser. I don't know if any Perris AFF-Is post here, but they'd be the best to ask.

Oh my GOD! I can't believe that video. This is one of hte weakest guys I've ever seen for not taking ANY responsibility for that. Sure, the RSL being disconnected didn't help the situation, but i would guess that he WAS trained to go to reserve if you have no main..duh. I would LOVE to talk to this guy and explain to him how I feel about his TV testimony.

Cheers,
Travis

There was some videos made by someone from Palacka, Fl called "So you want to be a affI" and "So you want to be a tandemI." Funny stuff. On the tandem video there is a load of tandems that are all sister and they are all pushing the tandem weight limit. Watching the TI get them through the door is priceless.
