New IRM revision

1 Candidates in an AFF Instructor Rating Course will need to score at least 75% on the In-Air Skills and Instruction Evaluation Form.

2 All Coach and Instructor rating candidates must complete the appropriate open-book test prior to attending a course. A score of 80% is required to pass the test. For those who show up without the test completed, or do not score at least 80% on the first test, a 100% score will be required on the test that is taken during the course.

3 A missed major rigging error is now scored as an automatic unsat in all courses for the air-skills section of each candidate evaluation.

4 Candidates who successfully complete a Coach or Instructor course may immediately exercise the privileges of that rating with a course director endorsement in the candidate’s log book. The candidate then has 30 days to ensure that the course paperwork has been processed at USPA Headquarters.

I'm most curious about the first point. My copy of the IRM doesn't specify a passing grade for the In-Air Skills. What's the current standard?

2 seems odd as someone who can take the test on their own time with their own resources should be able to do just as well as someone who sat through the course - and the test is damn easy anyways.

3 and 4 seem like common sense. There's no excuse for missing rigging errors, and paperwork lag sucks.

1. The old (then current) standard was 50% and it was not codified anywhere in the IRM. The new passing score is 75%.

2. The point here was to get candidates to do the reading and take the test before showing up at a course. Based on Course Director's input, many candidates were showing up totally unprepared.

3. This was an administrative cleanup to be consistent across all of the courses.

4. This was the result of HQ's desire to clarify the paperwork requirements.

Hope that helps.
