Tandem exits from C-182

I'm assuming that he's in a wide body 182. An old narrow body 182 with the flap handle on the floor is a really bad spot to be in with a tandem rig. It interfers with the flap handle, the rig doesn't actually fit there and its easy to wedge the drogue under the flap handle.

Good point! I think it could mostly be prevented by paying close attention to your handles in the A/C.
But, once again, another reason for me to stick with original technique of leaving from a kneeling position facing forward next to the door.

Also, it's a 182. Narrow or wide body, you gots ta pay attention to your movements in the airplane and protect your equipment no matter how you are leaving.

C182P date of mfg 1974
That would be a 'wide body' isn't it?

Please don't hold me to it, but I believe it was sometime in the '60s that the narrow bodies were stopped being made.

A lot of people don't realize how much more room that 3" of width gives you...they also don't realize how much slower a wide body climbs then a narrow body. Atleast as per my experience.:)

No kidding? Why didn't they (RWS) mention this to me?

It was covered in my rating course nearly 2 years ago, don't know why "they" didn't mention it to you.

Maybe they need to redesign the rig so it won't open prematurely being rubbed up against a door.

Bill Booth said something once that was along the lines of "every time I think I've idiot proofed my gear, a better idiot starts skydiving." I feel like they've gone a LONG way compared to the early tandem rigs with the Sigma, and I'm sure the next version will be even better, but as for now I'd rather just try to keep myself out of situations that might promote a bad scenerio.;)

Our DZ has a policy of no poised exits, only diving ones, for C-182 loads. This came about after several premature reserve deployments right off the step, one with yours truly. I think it's a good policy. I guess I just feel out of the loop on what's new and amazing. Didn't there used to be a news letter, same as AFF used to have?

I have no clue, I've been in this sport for only 4 1/2 years, and only an instructor for just under 2...BUT I think that would be a good idea to have a newsletter of sorts.

Atleast for now, this forum can take its place, as long as people are motivated to post questions and answers appropiately (as so it seems to have gone thus far).
