jumpwally 0 #1 February 3, 2009 Usually there is history or meaning to why a certian word is what it is...what about rip cord ? Was a cord ever ripped ? anyone know how the term came to be ?smile, be nice, enjoy life FB # - 1083
airtwardo 7 #2 February 3, 2009 IIRC...it was originally meant to denote the static-line 'cord' that ripped open the rig as you jumped...Tiny B. cut the attachment point so she could pull her own 'Ripcord'. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
howardwhite 6 #3 February 3, 2009 One common explanation is that -- prior to manually-operated parachutes -- it was used to describe the cord that "ripped open" the opening on a balloon so that the balloon would descend. The existing word later transferred to parachutes. FWIW HW
