howardwhite 6 #1 January 12, 2009 And who might be jumping it and what year? Unless you know, you might be surprised. HW
jonstark 8 #2 January 12, 2009 I'm guessing it's one of Pioneer's Taffeta tri-cons. They were built bullet proof but packed real big due to the reinforcing tapes. Couldn't hazard a guess as to who the jumper is. Guessing the date to be 1972. jon
wmw999 2,556 #3 January 12, 2009 I think that's a Jerry Bird system (ca 1975 maybe?). Might be an ad, with Jerry Bird himself modeling... That's based mainly on Thom Lyons' web page. I knew it was a Rip-off reserve with what looks like a block-cut main, so, well, Google was my friend Wendy W. There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. howardwhite 6 #4 January 12, 2009 Quote I think that's a Jerry Bird system. But the question was "what is this canopy". The name in the description is kinda funny. (And don't believe everything you read on Thom Lyons' web page.) HW
chuckakers 426 #5 January 12, 2009 uh...a Pioneer? Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
darkwing 5 #6 January 13, 2009 I would also guess Jerry Bird, maybe at the world meet, in Pretoria, 1974? It's got to be a 23 foot triconical main from the infamous Bird system. -- Jeff My Skydiving History

It looks too tall in profile to be a Tri-Con. I think the main container was called a Fastback? Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossilbe before they were done. howardwhite 6 #12 January 13, 2009 Well, some of you are kind of circling around the answer. When Bird was at Orange in '74, the Wings of Orange chose to jump rounds rather than PCs (or those new-fangled square things) so PI put together the Che-Po for them. I'm not sure who's in the picture -- could be Bird -- but it's a Bird reserve container for sure. Here's what the catalog had to say about it. councilman24 37 #13 January 13, 2009 "...forward speed that will hold up to 18 mph." !!! Certainly don't mean it will hold IN 18 mph winds, implying 18 mph forward speed. I've never seen this language used before. More like 4 mph forward speed to get to 14 mph backwards? Any clue what the target backwards speed was?I'm old for my age. howardwhite 6 #15 January 13, 2009 I didn't write the copy. (I suspect it was done by the late Chuck Embury). Which means I also did not misspell 'oscillation.' HW
