377 22 #1 August 31, 2008 Saw this rare C133 fly into Travis AFB yesterday morning. Wouldn't this have made a great jumpship for huge ways? Gigantic tailgate and room for 400, easily. She was built to transport Titan ICBMs. It made a nearby HC 130 Herc look anorexic. Just amazing that one was still flying in 2008, many decades after the USAF sent them to the scrapyards as dangerous, structurally unsound and unreliable. This was her last flight, coming down from AK to CA. She will be displayed at the Travis base museum. http://boeing377.googlepages.com/c1332018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 377 22 #3 September 2, 2008 The C 133 was not used for jumping normally, but C 133 jumps were made over Edwards AFB during some test work. At one time consideration was given to using the C 133 as an airborne ICBM launcher. The missile would have been extracted by a small chute and then ignite when vertical.2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968. skybill 22 #4 September 2, 2008 Hi 377, I've seen many video's of C-130's and C'5's unloading a drop but an ICBM out of that thing!!!!!!! Think of the CG shift with the ICBM 1/2 way off the Tail ramp??SCR-2034, SCS-680 III%, Deli-out
377 22 #5 September 2, 2008 Yeah, the ICBM launch sounds VERY impractical, but maybe at the apogee of a zoom climb and pushover at zero Gs? The C 133 had an astounding payload capability but the fuselage was weak, several suffered inflight structural failures. This giant did not have boosted controls, just flying servo tabs. There were some jumps made during tests, presumably by USAF jumpers. It would be fun if someone reading this forum had some more knowledge about C 133 jumps.
