3331 137 #26 May 17, 2007 QuoteMore dredging in the archive cellar. This is from Spotter, May-June 1978. I think it is the McGurr/Daugherty wrap but am not sure; there's no caption. HW Look like what I saw. Carl Daugherty and Charlie McGurr warped up at the 1976 Turkey meet in Z-Hills. They hit a metal roof that flexed and absorbed their impact. Carl was released form the Hospital that night, Charlie stayed overnight. Thinking about it now I can hear them hitting the roof.I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving. Jim_Hooper 4 #30 October 25, 2007 QuoteAnd here, five months later, is a color picture of the McGurr/Daugherty wrap. HW I was standing in the general vicinity of the photographer, when I heard someone say, "Oh, shit," and looked up just before they hit. Like others who have commented, I well remember the sound of them hitting the roof. Like hitting a huge, flat-toned kettle drum. And no, the dented corrugated panels were never replaced. Not only was there no leak when it rained, but the dent served to remind folks to be aware of other canopies in the air. Hoop

Hoop Seeing the roof of that shed reminds me of my 'close encounter' with Hoop when he was DZO at The Hills. It was the Turkey Meet of 79 or 80 (John Cutts had his Tiger Striped DC3 there) and my new wife and I drove down for the occasion. Since she had recently bought a new mini Japanese pick up truck, we decided to take it, and camp in the bed. Shortly after arriving at the airport it began to rain, so to stay dry we backed the rear of the truck under that shed. After the drive from Alabama, combined with any liquor or substances floating around, it was no surprise that the sun had been up for a while before I opened my eyes. However, I didn't get to sleep too much longer before one of Hoop's staff approached and said "Dude, what the hell are you doing parked under here?" After explaining that it had been raining when I parked there last night, he seemed OK with it, but added..."Well, I quess that's OK, but if you're still here when Hoop shows up, he's gonna ream your ass good!" Needless to say, we quickly took a more traditional parking spot and continued on to have a great time. I guess it took me being a DZO myself about 20 years later to understand what it takes to hold that position, but I'm still glad not to have been busted by Hoop that morning! howardwhite 6 #32 October 26, 2007 O.K., nostalgia time continues with two under-canopy pix and one ground pic. (I didn't take them.) The open tin shed is the left portion of the building. The third picture is the front of the right portion. Have fun identifying canopies, planes, people, cars, etc.HW

BASE359 Sorry about that, Jay. Today I'd call using available resources good lateral thinking. You sure the staff member wasn't Frenchy being grumpy because he was waiting to fire up his camp stove and you were parked in his kitchen? Hoop

Hoop No big deal Hoop...If it weren't for events like that, I wouldn't have any good stories to tell when I get old(er) Not being sure if I was parked in Frenchy's kitchen or not, I've added a red arrow to HW's ZH's pic in the spot where Sally and I parked that night...with all the accuracy that 27 years will allow. Thanks again for your hospitality, your part in skydiving history, as well as holding some awesome skydiving events!
