steve1 5 #26 June 19, 2006 QuoteIf you intend to jump the 'comp' model at 180 pounds-make good friends with a orthopedic doctor! Save that canopy for history as it is, don't modify it. Find a Mk1 to jump.-Doc ............................................................. I appreciate the advice. I stood up the last Mk1 that I jumped a year or so ago. If I can modify this one to fall about the same, I'd love to make some jumps on it each year. I don't want a rig that I can't jump. According to Gary Lewis, by making these modifications to the comp model, it will be almost identical to a Mk1. The modifications are fairly simple. (shortening up the two long turn slots, and putting a data panel over the large drive hole in the back). The only real difference from a Mk1 will be that it will be short lined which can increase the rate of decent somewhat. Mr. Lewis says that if you weigh less than 190 pounds there should be no noticeable difference in decent from a MK1 (even though it is short lined). I've never jumped a short lined PC, so I don't have a clue if this info. is accurate. This canopy looks to be in really great shape and I hate to see it just sitting in storage someplace. I was jumping yesterday with a smoke jumper (skydiver-rigger) who says he is willing to do the work on it, and he wants to jump it also. Maybe he's crazy also, but I think I'll give it a try. With French jump boots and a good PLF...What could go wrong? If the landings are too rough I'll make a para-sail out of it....Steve1

drjump 0 #29 June 19, 2006 During the 70's I owned and operated 'Houston Parachute Service', in LaPorte, TX. Everytime that I ordered a new para-commander, for my own use, I would short line it 36 to 44 inches before the first jump on it. They performed so well that jumpers would buy them off of my back at the DZ. I was going through a new canopy a month, for a while! But, then again, that was thirty years and 30 pounds ago. Good luck with the modification. Let me know how it works out.-Doc-D-2785
JerryBaumchen 1,466 #30 June 19, 2006 Hi steve1, As I mentioned, I converted a Mk I to a Comp PC and then back to a Mk I again (didn't like the Comp). If I remember correctly on a Mk I there are three small steering slots (maybe only two) and one large steering slot on each side. I think the Comp PC has one more long steering slot. I would recommend that you try to get a picture of a Mk I before you start changing things. Good luck, Jerry
ripcord4 0 #31 June 19, 2006 Steve, PM me with your e-mail address and I can send you a scan of the various slot layouts of the different PC's. It may help your conversion.

Gary Lewis's manual shows the slot patterns for the various PC's. (Even the Russian paracommander). It's really packed with info. I learned a lot by reading parts of it and am still referring back to it. It came with my PC when it arrived. I'm not sure where a guy would go to buy one, but I've seen them for sale on e-bay. It makes for interesting reading.....Steve1
stratostar 5 #33 June 20, 2006 Para-gear had the Gary lewis hand book for a buck for a long time, I think thay still do. As for doing the mod, what do you have to lose. If it slows it down to a MK-1, GOOD! If it don't well there is always water jumps. I'm between 200 and 220 out the door +/- a few lbs. I get nice soft stand up's on my MK-1 8 out of 10 times, I use a rear riser flair, I don't plan on a stand up, they just happen. I will say as I get older I like jumping my jumbo more and more, but I have no problem jumping the MK-1 as a fat ass. ~you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

steve1 5 #35 June 28, 2006 Sounds good Jeane...My PC may not be ready to go since I need some work on the tape wells. My smokejumper rigger is busy on fires. Maybe I can get some quick work done on it at the Prairie. I'd love to jump your Pap if not. I'll bring the boat...Steve1
Amazon 7 #36 August 7, 2006 Well what did you think of my old ParaCommander MK II at Lost Prairie... I am not a big fan of OD GREEN but man that thing was responsive......and not a bad spot for those winds if I do say so myself. YOU.... better jump yours next year there....it is a heck of a lot of fun...
 steve1 5 #37 August 15, 2006 I have to admit that is one nice rig! I was really jealous...... Hopefully my rigger will be done with my PC, before the boogie next year, and I'll try it out......Steve1
 slug 1 #38 August 15, 2006 QuoteWell what did you think of my old ParaCommander MK II at Lost Prairie... If your going to jump it again in that same container Consider having someone sewing in some wider extensions. Closing that container was way to hard. R.I.P.
