flipper 0 #1 August 2, 2002 Ive heard of 2 fatalities in the last week...it appears that both jumpers were trying to get into wind for landing....both of them are now dead. take a down winder...get covered in mud/dirt/dust, have you mates take the piss.....but at least youll survive. petur 0 #3 August 2, 2002 Yup, totally agree! I made a low flat-turn yesterday (no wind) to avoid both a barbed wire fence and rocks. Practice your flat-turns too, they'll save you someday!--- P. kallend 2,129 #4 August 2, 2002 A bit more planning when above 1000ft will generally avoid the NEED for an avoidance maneuver or a downwinder.
coconutmonkey 0 #5 August 2, 2002 Practicing a downwinder is actually a good training tool to let you know what you're capable of in thos eoff DZ situations. Brief the DZO or safety first that you're going to do a downwinder (avoid folks parading out to meet you when you land and get some tips on how to best execute). Let teh load organizer know that you'll be going against the grain so they can place you in the least effected traffic group (usually last out) and you may pop high to allow everyone else time to get down.Hearts & Minds 2 to the Heart- 1 to the Mind- Home of the Coconut Lounge, Spa, & Artillery Range

cobaltdan 0 #7 August 3, 2002 definately...before you get on that plane ask yourself would you take a downwind landing? if you are not comfortable performing a downwind landing, you should not be jumping in the current winds or on your current choice of canopy. downwind landings should be practiced ! (let every one in the plane know your pattern) you will sustain far more injury from a botched low turn into the wind than a botched downwind landing ! we all know hot to plf...and if you had practiced, it wouldn't be a plf. sincerely, dan <><>Daniel Preston <><> atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)
GrumpySmurf 0 #8 August 6, 2002 Ditto on that thought - I made it a practice to do when ever I demo'd a new canopy - tried to find a time/day when the winds were light to moderate and made sure land way away from everyone else. Re-assuring to know the worst that will happen is the re-sale value of my rig will drop from the sliding PLF(s).
Snowflake 0 #9 August 15, 2002 I like Downwinders there fun a little scary but lots of fun. They just take a little practice but once you know you can land downwind you always know you have that as an out and won't freak out if thats the only option thats presented to you
