cas5259 0 #1 November 19, 2010 Any idea on why Collegiate Nationals is so expensive this year at Skydive AZ? I did some math and if someone were to enter all events except for accuracy, the cost is about $37 per jump. What the hell!! That's not even adding in the registration fee, which is another $150. I know they have to pay for judges, video slots, and a few other things, but really? How can they do that when their boogie, which is going on that same week, has tickets for $19.50. I tried to contact Skydive AZ with no results. Not a whole lot of teams, aside from the military and about 4 to 5 schools with well established clubs, will be able to afford it. That's nothing compared to the thousands of college jumpers out there. Spaceland was way cheaper last year. Sounds like a rip off to me. -Chris
Bolas 5 #2 November 19, 2010 http://www.skydiveaz.com/events/10_collegiates.aspx General Entry Fee: $150 per person. Includes all meet related expenses, medals, banquet, T-shirt, sanction fee. Not even going to factor in what the videographers charge the dz per jump and ignoring they prolly have some of the top in the world flying and offering advice. Event Fees: • Accuracy and Sport Accuracy: $18 per jump. Accuracy: Accuracy will take place at our Classics competition venue by our wind tunnel. This allows safe operations at the lower altitudes of Accuracy while those not involved in this event can avail themselves of jumps from full altitude at our main operations area. A shuttle running between the two venues will allow for easy access to either site. While that seems high for hop'n pops. once you factor in the shuttling people around as well as juggling the aircraft and the holds that may happen it makes more sense. I don't know if they use elctronic scoring (I assume they do) so that's an added expense as well. • 2-way Formation Skydiving: $230 per team ($115 per person) includes jumps and air-to-air video. Price is based on three rounds from 11,500 feet. $230/9 slots= $25.55 per slot. That's about average jump prices alot of places. This includes the videographers 3 pack jobs. • 4-way Formation Skydiving: $700 per team ($175 per person) includes jumps and air-to-air video. Price is based on six rounds from 11,500. $700/30 $23.33 per slot + 6 pack jobs for the videographer. • Freefly: $310 per team ($155 per person) includes jumps and air-to-air video. Price is based on four rounds from 13,000. $310/12 $25.83 per slot plus 4 videographer pack jobs. Some places charge $26 per slot. • 6-way Speed Formation: $480 per team ($80 per person) includes air-to-ground video. Price is based on three rounds from 11,000. $480/21 = $22.86 per slot plus 3 pack jobs. Practice Jumps: • Accuracy and Sport Accuracy: $18 per jump. • FS and Freefly jumps: $21 per jump or Holiday Boogie rate, whichever is lowest. (The Holiday Boogie jump rate is usually substantially below our normal rate. Example: 2009 normal rate = $23.50, Boogie rate = $19.50.) Perhaps if you were to provide your own videographer thay'd let you all jump for boogie rate, but the slot prices for jumps and video are not high by any means.Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh. cas5259 0 #3 November 19, 2010 Thanks, looks like I undestimated the video slots. Second question.....how can the slots for each event be different? It costs the same every time to send someone up.
Bolas 5 #4 November 19, 2010 The more people on a jump the less videographers needed to film so the cheaper the overall slot price. Freefly may be more as it requires different skills to properly video.Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh. pilotdave 0 #6 December 10, 2010 Anyone know how video works at collegiates? The registration form for teams says video will be provided. I'm going there to do video for one school. Is that not allowed? I won't be too disappointed... there's a little boogie going on at the same time. Dave

Dave Two years ago at SDA they had a pool, but teams could use their own photographer if they wanted. The thing is that you can only get video rejumps if you were using a pool photographer, not a dedicated one. IIRC, only one of the AF teams used a team photographer. Best bet is to check with Byran Burke or Kirk Knight to get the skinny on what they are doing this year. Also the comp is run out at the tunnel, so it would be logistically hard to do a team jump, then a fun jump (rinse-repeat) Does your camera record to tape or a memory stick? .. pilotdave 0 #9 December 12, 2010 No biggie for me... I'll happily stick with fun jumping and thank the UConn guys for convincing me to come out there. I've got both tape and card based cameras. Normally shoot a CX100 now... would probably do double video for competition jumps. Dave
