Gravitymaster 0 #1 August 30, 2002 Don't know whether its me or not but I have noticed a trend lately of folks who have to be told to secure their helmets on take-off. I was constantly having to say something to jumpers at the WFFC. The response I often get ranges from eyes rolling to an apology. Most violaters I have observed are experienced skydivers who should know better. For anyone who doesn't remember, securing your helmet isn't necessarily to protect you if the plane loses power or crashes, it's to prevent your helmet from becoming a projectile and killing or injuring someone else in the event of an emergency. I have even observed a DZO recently with a camera helmet laying on the floor during take-off. Don't make me come over there. I will say something to you. hohonukai 0 #2 August 30, 2002 The Helmet Nazi Amen, brother. After the first time I was told, I've made sure mine's secure ever since. Safety safety safety. Everything counts.
Hooknswoop 19 #3 August 30, 2002 I'm w/ ya, Gravity, AKA "The Helmet Nazi". I say something if someone is leaving a helmet off (un-secured, buckled to their chest/leg strap is OK by me), or anything else. You never know, everthing should be secured for take-off. Gravitymaster 0 #4 August 30, 2002 I have yet to understand why folks won't secure their helmet. I can't believe they have forgotten their student training. The only conclusion I can draw is they are either too lazy, they just think they are too cool, or they are just plain ignorant. The Helmet Nazi
brianthomas1966 0 #5 August 30, 2002 I must have rode with you once at WFFC. I'm glad somebody's paying attention. I'm glad you weren't reminding me - I still secure my helmet, either on my head or on my chest strap. I'm still so new at this, I still have that new skydiver smell! The Helmet Nazi I'm so lazy, I don't even take the helmet in the plane to begin with. (Well, at least on hop and pops.) ____________________________________________________________ I'm RICK JAMES! drenaline 0 #7 August 31, 2002 Thats a great safety issue! you are right, any loose thing in the plane can be and will be a projectile in the case of an accident. Another thing is that if the plane crashes or anything else, the helmet might save you; put it this way: The one wearing the helmet will be the one saving the "non helmet concussion in head" people from the fire in the aircraft. Gravitymaster 0 #8 August 31, 2002 He He.... Yep, if you saw someone being a pain in the ass, pointing at helmets and asking people to secure them, that was probably me. Just one of my pet peeves. The Helmet Nazi
Jessica 0 #9 August 31, 2002 QuoteThe only conclusion I can draw is they are either too lazy, they just think they are too cool, or they are just plain ignorant. Lazy? Heh. To me, it's more work to hold it. Ignorant? It's hard to look at most of the load busily putting their helmets on and not wonder why they're doing it.... However, sometimes I do forget to put it on, and I do appreciate reminders if you see me clutching it and staring blankly into space.Skydiving is for cool people only
drenaline 0 #10 August 31, 2002 Quoteyou see me clutching it and staring blankly into space. Jessica you are not supposed to drink or take drugs before jumping. J/K Ooops this is not talkback. Some people don't wear them because its to hot. HISPA 21 www.panamafreefall.com
Gravitymaster 0 #11 August 31, 2002 If it's too hot, then secure it with either your chest strap or seatbelt. Nobody's saying it has to be on your head. The Helmet Nazi

kallend 2,146 #13 September 4, 2002 If the plane has a problem on take-off and runs off the end of the runway and into a ditch (I've seen it happen to a Skyvan), you'll be glad you wore it on your head and not on your seat belt.

It's really amazing how many people just hold onto their camera-gear on takeoff. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
