askir 0 #1 September 9, 2002 Hey: Anyone out there jumped a flag in freefall, you know 2 guys hanging onto it while another fool takes the picture? (that would be me: the 3rd fool) I have been approached by two fellows wanting to do this and even though it is their responsibililty, I want to educate myself before I agree to film them. Things like a flag wrapped around my face while trying to deploy come to mind, would very much appreciate all the education available on this subject. Been jumping for 20 years and this will be a first for me. Also tips for them, I am sure they are doing their homework but a little extra wont hurt. drenaline 0 #2 September 9, 2002 it sounds like a freefly thread, maybe posting it there will get you a bit more answers than here, just a thought. Be sure to post the picture, sounds cool! HISPA 21 www.panamafreefall.com
PhreeZone 20 #3 September 9, 2002 Do you happen to know what size flag they will be jumping and if it will have handles sewn on it? If its a small flag the tricks will differ from a large one. Big one is if its not going well... drop the banner. In terms of videoing it... I've been taught to float the exit so if they let the flag go on exit it can't wrap me. Also never get above the flag/banner in case they release it, it can't wrap me. I was also told never touch it unless I was holding it. Also don't make the jumpers unstable to avoid getting them wraped (Ie back flying under it and causeing a burble for the flag or jumper) Talk to a local jumper thats dont it before or a demo jumper. They are good to pick their brain on in this case.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Ducky 0 #4 September 10, 2002 Interesting I am hoping to do the same on Wednesday it will also be my first flag jump. I know a jumper at the DZ who has done it, made an awesome pic considering he is a Brazilian national who has only been here for about a year jumping with the Stars n Stripes. kwakSometimes your the bug, sometimes your the windshield. pilotdave 0 #5 September 12, 2002 You can see a video of something similar (a two person banner) at ftp://ftp.skydivingmovies.com/public/cpsc/banner.wmv. Dave
pilotdave 0 #6 September 12, 2002 Oh one thing I thought of...pretty obvious, but make sure the jumpers with the flag face the sun. In that banner video above, it took them a while (most of it was cut out of this video because of some static) to get facing the right direction for the camera. diverds 0 #7 September 17, 2002 looks like that flag could have used a little reinforcement. Skydive Radio
pilotdave 0 #8 September 19, 2002 Quotelooks like that flag could have used a little reinforcement. Yep. Actually a rigger stiched some webbing around the perimeter and diagonally across the back, and added the handles. The banner was made of felt or something which just tore apart almost instantly. They actually had a new banner made on F111 and will jump it whenever they find a chance. Dave
