riggerrob 644 #26 January 17, 2003 Over the last 20 years of instruction, I have seen a lot of first-timers do a lot of stupid things, therefor I pefer to hang them under large (280 to 300 square foot) docile canopies. If they demonstrate any skill at landing, we transition them to 230 square foot canopies after half a dozen jumps. As their canopy skills improve, we soon transition them to 190 square foot canopies. I agree with you that it is a bad idea to keep tiny women on large canopies for more than the first couple of jumps. Under-loaded Manta 290s do not flare, but they do allow people to develop bad habits.
rigging65 0 #27 January 17, 2003 I tend to agree with Rob on this. Students do stupid-unexpected stuff. That's why they're students! One just hopes they do less stupid stuff as they get more experience.... ...on the other hand, it sure would be nice to reduce future canopy accidents with really good initial training and realistic canopy sizing for weight....
