Statistics and cypres

Recommended Posts

Hi

I know that the reserve frequency is roughly 1/700, but what is the cypres save statistics.
My guess would be somewhere about 1/30000, but that number is just based on my common sense and guessing.

There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

I think it would be pretty difficult to compile any meaningful statistics about Cypres-fires. You'd have to know the total number of jumps, the number of jumps with a cypres, the number of cypres fires... I can't imagine where you could find all the necessary data.

I could find the number of jumps made in Finland in 2001, and the number of Cypres fires that year, but there's no way of telling on how many jumps the jumper was wearing a Cypres.:|

Some countries that require Cypres or other AAD's make it a bit easier to figure out, but calling Airtec or SSK and getting the number of cutters they have sold might surprize a lot of people. There are more poeple out there that have scared that little box then most people want to believe.

>I read somewhere that cypres saves about 80 people per year,

Cypreses _fire_ about 80 times a year when people get too low with nothing (or little) out. We would not have 80 no-pull fatalities a year without the cypres, so that's not quite the number of 'saves.' Based on my experience (and on history) the number would be closer to 10-20.
