San Francisco DZ's ?

Recommended Posts

Quote

A friend of mine is moving to San Francisco and is looking for a nice friendly DZ close to the city , any recommendations ? He has been looking at Skydive San Francisco but I have heard its 80 miles outside town :S Are there any others closer ?

Byron (Bay Area Skydiving)
Davis (Skydance)
Lodi (The parachute center)
and a bit further would be Hollister and Monterey

Have your friend check all of them out!

I am usually in Byron.

Hollister is actually the same distance (~90miles) as Skydance, but doesn't require crossing a bridge (or two) or going through the 80/680 junction in Fairfield. They've had the best weather in my experience.

Santa Rosa (now gone) and Byron are about 75 miles, involve one bridge. Coming home from Byron on a weekend, the San Mateo is probably a better call than the Bay Bridge.

The poorly named Skydive SF is a bit over 100. Monterey is 120, Lodi is somewhere in between, I think.

Acording to mapquest, Cloverdale (skydive sf) is 87 miles and Monterey is 112. Lodi is also 87 - who da thunk? Davis is 74.

Cloverdale (skydive sf) is only a small cessna dz. If you're going up north to wine taste, then by all means, stop by.

We are very fortunate to have so many DZ's in the SF area. Each of our DZ's have different characters, management styles, aircraft and types of jumpers.
Skydance has a great group of head down flyers, (one team qualifying for world cup), a 4 way team just back from Nationals. They also have the new PAC 750 airplane, great facilities and rentals.
Lodi has a group of experienced relative workers, and otter and beech 99, a nice landing area and swoop pond.
Each of our drop zones have something different to offer and I suggest to try them all. I suggest you start with Skydance, Lodi and Byron. Skydance first because I will be happy to introduce your friend and see he/she has a good time.
Send me an email when you know the schedule, MikeB

I though Cloverdale was 30 miles past Healdsburg, but I've never driven it. I think my error was in recalled Santa Rose as 70some miles away - was actually 50some. Maybe it will come back some day under new owners?!

Monterey is read off the odometer. Mapquest may quota distance via Highway 1/Santa Cruz, but that wouldn't usually be the faster route.

Technically Byron is the closest. But your friend will find a smorgasborg of friendly DZs in Nor Cal.

Loads of talent and coaches to jump with at most of the drop zones.

I would recommend trying them all on to see which one fits!
