What's the Ranch/other NY dropzones like?

Recommended Posts

The wife is from NY, but we both live in London (where i'm from) but in my numerous trips out the NY i still haven't jumped out there. I'm keen to do so, might get a chance later this year, but i'm wondering...which clubs out there are good and relatively easy to get to from the city? Good, as in, good people, good vibes, good aircraft, good value for money etc - everything you would like in a dz.

The Ranch seems really well established and a nice place to jump but some personal experiences are always nice. I read some of the reports on the dz in the dz reviews, but quite a few are a little old now. Is it still as nice a place as what it seems?

What other places in NY are worth a look in? Where is nice to jump mid week too?

Thanks

I jump mainly at the Ranch and occasionally at Skydive Jersey shore. I'd be happy to give you a ride to either if you are in NYC.

The Ranch:
3 Otters, 1 Porter and 1 Cessna. The Vibe is very good. Jumping is constant. On weekends it is common to have 2 or 3 Otters running. You can generally get on as many loads as you want. You will get tired or go broke before the end of the weekend. The bonfire at night is always fun. Plenty of beer and BS. Good people and good times. If you want to freefly, do RW or Crew, you will find someone to jump with.
There are 2 covered packing areas, showers and free overnight camping. To get there on your own, you can take a bus from the city to New Paltz. From new Paltz, you can call the DZ to try to bum a ride or take a cab for about $10. The number is (845) 255-9538.

Skydive Jersey Shore:
1 Cessna 182 and 1 Cessna 206. A very personal DZ. The DZO is always around and is happy to help you out. They have a covered packing area, and snacks in the hanger. The Vibe is very good. You will get to all the people at the DZ very quickly. They will all just walk up and say Hi. I can't say much about the parties at night; but, I would be happy to have a fews beers with the people at SJS.

I am not sure about any camping or accomodations there. I would bet that if you called they could help a skydiver or 2 get a place to crash. I have no idea how to get there by public transportation. You can call them at (732) 938-9002.

Around NYC, there is also Sky's the Limit and Crosskeys in New Jersey and Sky Dive Long Island. I've never been to these so I'll leave it to the rest to comment on them.

If you need any more info, shoot me a PM. I'll be happy to give you a ride to either one on a weekend when I am going up.

I'd be willing to take a ride to Crosskeys. I've never been there; but, I've heard nice things about it. Hell, I just want to jump. If it is a reasonable distance from NYC, I'll be willing to go there. PM me when you are coming over and I'll give you my mobile number.

I LOVE the Ranch. The place is just fun from when you step on it till you leave. The whole thing reminds me of stepping back into a time capsle with the old school bus used as a classroom and things. Lots of good loads flying all day. When I was last there we did a little of all types of flying and had no issues getting on any load or finding people to jump with.

I'm heading back to the Ranch this summer for a long weekend I enjoyed it so much :)

Once you get out of the city you can be at CK in 1:30hr to 1:45hr (depending on traffic - It'll probably be worse in the summer, but it still fine now).
CK is actually further than the ranch for me, but I take the drive b/c it has a larger LZ, still important to me:|
