SkydiveNFlorida 0 #29 February 11, 2005 QuoteThat means making SURE every skydiver there is CURRENT AND CAPABLE of the landing area. That's why Sebastian requires the c-license for the Keys Boogie... and even then people are bound to have some problems (there were off landings), but I suppose there are less than if there were lower # jumpers. -A

riddler 0 #41 February 14, 2005 So the boogie was moved inland to Skydive SouthWest Florida. WFFC and I were there on Saturday and we had a pretty good time. The planned Casa and Otter were not there - only Bob's Caravan. The people were cool and fun to jump with. Thanks to Eric from Fasttrax for organizing some good RW jumps. One question I had was - considering the boogie was no longer on the beach and the planes were not there, why were jump tickets $23 each? I've never been to a boogie with ticket prices that high.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
CSpenceFLY 1 #42 February 14, 2005 Not sure what kind of agreement the original organizer made with the DZ but I would hope some of that money was going to the organizers.Although I don't think we have heard the whole story here. They put alot of work and $$$ into this and shouldn't loose their ass because of the city. Those that know me know that I don't do my events for the money but on the same note I can't afford to borrow money to finance a boogie gone bad because of the weather or other unforseen problem.I would like to hear from the organizers here, find out if they came out alright and I would gladly make a contribution to help them out and make sure they are not afraid to try this again somewhere else. The other option is registration money up front for this kind of event. Thanatos340 1 #43 February 14, 2005 Has anyone had any luck getting the Radisson to refund room deposits? Those of us who had reservations at the Radisson still got charged a $250 Cancellation Fee by the hotel. I do feel bad for the organizers as I know they put alot of work into this and everyone was really looking forward to it but they were not the only ones to get screwed on this deal. pyke 0 #44 February 14, 2005 From the Naples Daily News...a.k.a. The Marco Eagle: Indiana woman injured after parachute misses its mark; event canceled By NICHOLAS AZZARA, naazzara@naplesnews.com February 11, 2005 An Indiana woman was injured Thursday on Marco Island when her parachute was blown off course, sending her into a neighborhood where her foot tripped over a power line and she fell to the ground. Erin Walters, 29, of Pendleton, Ind., an experienced jumper, failed to hit her mark just south of the Radisson Suite Beach Resort. A gust of wind blew her east into a neighborhood and she landed at the intersection of Amber Drive and Valley Avenue. Walters was taken to the emergency room at Naples Community Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman did not report on her condition. Emergency officials responded to the accident at 12:35 p.m. Marco Island Police Chief Roger Reinke said Walters did not suffer injuries from the power lines, but was unaware of her condition after the fall. Walters was among a small group of skydivers testing the conditions before inexperienced members of the public jumped in tandem later in the day. Marco officials revoked the Radisson's temporary sporting permit and a three-day skydiving event called "Beach Boogie" was canceled. Skydive Greensburg and the Kiwanis Club of Marco Island arranged the event as a fund-raiser for the Tsunami Relief Fund. Skydive Greensburg owner Bob Dougherty said the company offered jumps onto the Marco beach in 1999 and 2002. For Beach Boogie, the company advertised across the country promoting Marco's inviting weather in the middle of winter. Beach Boogie was scheduled for Feb. 10-12 and for $179 people could make a tandem jump with an experienced skydiver. Dougherty wanted Beach Boogie to be an annual event, but those plans were dashed after the accident. Reinke said parachuting on Marco is an unlikely event in the future. "The risks outweigh the rewards for something like this," Reinke said. "In the future I would recommend denying a permit to skydive anywhere in the city." rocketdog 0 #45 February 14, 2005 QuoteI do feel bad for the organizers as I know they put alot of work into this now i do not know EVERY minute detail, but i would think that if "a lot of work" was put into this event, the city/landing area/other politics of the entire matter would have been worked out. yes, some unforseen events did arise, but i hardly feel bad for the organizers -- did you get your registration fee back? i think skydivers were the ones getting screwed.... see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com
RastaRicanAir 0 #46 February 14, 2005 Maybe it was gutless to wait for someone else to bring it up first, but this is a point the eight jumpers in my party spent the whole weekend discussing. With all due respect to the organizers, and especially the girl who got hurt, we also spent the whole weekend discussing: 1) the relatively high jump ticket cost, which remained high even after the bonus of beach jumps was taken away 2) the fact that a pre-paid pack of 10 tickets was the same price as buying them individually, 3) the registration fee which -rumor had it- was required of people who weren't even planning to jump, and 4) the choice of landing area which, compared to other vast nearby areas of the public beach, looked like a swoop lane. I'm aware that this sort of event is hard to plan properly, and even harder to make public. but it has been done. (I have close friends like Chris Spence of the RoamingDZ.com who have done it.) I have to believe that if an effective relationship had been established with the city, the authorities, the people granting the permits, and the hotel and beach community, and if care had been taken to remind jumpers to keep their spots tight and pull high enough to be sure they made it back home, this boogie would have gone off almost without a hitch. Numerous jumpers would have been spared ridiculous hotel and airline cancellation fees. And the organizers would have made a LOT more money in the long run. At least that's what the eight of us decided before we decided to hang out on the beach and spend our pile of jump money on Margaritas instead. As it is, there will never be another canopy spotted over Marco Island unless it's tethered to a fishing boat, and that's really unfortunate. If any of the information I gathered off the grapevine is faulty, I welcome clarification.OrFunV/LocoBoca Rodriguez/Sonic Grieco/Muff Brother #4411 -"and ladies....messin with Robbie is venturing into territory you cant even imagine!-cuz Robbie is
douwanto 22 #47 February 14, 2005 The hotel pulled the plug on their end but they would not refund my deposit . The organizers owe everyone an explaination and should have posted one by now. I think that they haven't speaks volumes for their lack of concern for those who were coming to their event. My thoughts of them at this point is that they are a bunch of money hungry f@$* wads and have no concern for the skydivers who they invited to Marco Island. It was 1 hour 15 minutes to the new boogie location which was no good for those of us who had a suite at the Radisson and could not get out of it. The other skydivers went leaving those they were going to splip rooms with holding the bag. When planning to attend events that are in a uniqe location please checkout the organizers and look for a history of good events. Like the Chris Spence and the Roamind DZ. These guys could use some lessons from Chris. Uncle/GrandPapa Whit Unico Rodriguez # 245 Muff Brother # 2421
divnswoop 0 #48 February 14, 2005 QuoteI just hate to see us not be able to jump at these awesome locations because city officials are tired of incidents... First off, I hope the 2 people that hurt themselves will fully recover. But, after reading the article and hearing that this jumper BARELY had 100 jumps I became a little angry. I can't believe that they were allowed to jump into a space that wasn't even as big as a open field demo from what I heard.(sim 7-1... open field demo min 500,000 sq feet landing area, can't pass over spectators lower than 250 ft, can't land within 100 ft of spectators,MUST HAVE A C LICENSE) And it sounds like the landing area was closer to a Lv 1 or Lv 2 demo with NO outs.(a beach full of people is NOT an true out for an inexperienced person) That starts to become tight for a caravan load.(let alone a casa that has a screaming jumprun) Now granted the BSR's are "recommendations", I don't want to discuss FAR's and AC 91-45C here because I don't know who reads these threads. Maybe a conversation with Crosskeys(Wildwood Boogie) Sebastian or Aerohio(Keys Boogies) would have made things go a little smoother. Dropping a couple loads of your friends who you know are capable is MUCH different than advertising a boogie this size. Looks like there will be no skydiving in Marco for a while and the next guy is going to have a hell of a time convincing the city that this can be safe and benificial to skydivers and the city. It sounds like several skydivers just hung there for the weekend, so I guess it was still good for the hotels and local business. It's just a shame that so many jumpers spent so much money NOT to get to do what they came for. Now that some of the details are coming out about the accidents(2 the first couple hours) i really can't blame the city like I did in earlier posts. I guess this site(marco) is burned now..
