Northern Calif. recommendations

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about a vacation (not centered on skydiving, but probably including it) in Northern Cali/Oregon in October. Thinking about driving from wherever it's cheapest to fly to in the SF area, to Portland during about a week, and taking in scenery, wine, redwoods, coastline, and whatever else comes my way.

Wondering about weather, and where the best place(s) to go to jump would be. There's a boatload of DZs; looks like Davis, Lodi, Byron and Hollister are big; Monterey Bay is beautiful, and Santa Rosa and Cloverdale are right on the way.

Looking for ideas, recommendations, and offers of free jumps, of course :D. For one day, a relaxed atmosphere is much more important than the hoppingest busiest dropzone with incredibly hot RW...

thanks

October is beginning to get into rainy season, but chances are that you'll be able to jump on a given day. More rainy as you get farther north. It can be pretty chilly on the coast, even in the summer.

You'll find more belly fliers at Lodi, and cheaper tickets (unless someone offers those free ones), but it is farther from the coast. There are also some good Oregon DZ's.

The drive up the coast is slow, winding roads, beautiful.

Up and back to Portland, or just one way?

I'll bet you can find a free place to crash here in the bay area with a dz.commer, at least for a night or so.

Wendy check out the Byron Boogie at the end of Sept then drive north.
The problem that time of year as was stated is beginning in October you start into the wet season that lasts until June. The roads along the coast are gorgeous.. and the groves of big trees are humbling to walk thru.

Come a little earlier. The end of Sept is usually still nice but as you get closer to OCT you stand more chance of wet rainey fall weather along the coast. The Oregon/N California coast is rocky and stunning but since the water temps are in the 50's its usually sweater weather all along the coast all summer long.

Actually, you're absolutely right, and as it happens, I meant the other October -- that would be September. Oops...

Hey, Wendy, come on out to Byron and I'll give you a free jump ticket and hook you up with some exceptional RW, 6 to 14 way out of our KingAir.

I'll throw in some nice photos too, cause it would be nice to see you again.

:)
