freakydiver 0 #1 August 5, 2003 Having not done a night jump in a good year, I'm trying to remember what equipment one generally needs for a night jump. Lighted alti, flashlight to check canopy, isn't there supossed to be a light visible for 3 miles that is on during freefall and canopy ride? Can you use glowsticks for that application? Blue ones... -- (N.DG) "If all else fails – at least try and look under control." --
Amazon 7 #2 August 5, 2003 oh.. get the new glow in the dark Altimaster Galaxy.. it ROCKS... and I think Storobes can be had at Radio Shack for the light requirement.. otherwise copius use of glow sticks.. especially if you are doing RW Don't forget some lighting on the ground. Visual accuity is limited and depth perception of a flare that is off by a few feet can really suck. Amazon
pilotdave 0 #3 August 5, 2003 I believe the light visible for 3 miles is only needed under canopy, not freefall (so you can hang a strobe under you after opening if you want). Glow sticks are not visible for 3 miles. Dave
freakydiver 0 #4 August 5, 2003 Thanks guy and gal... Lighting on ground taken care of by DZ, just trying to prepare by purchasing some reusable equipment... Thanks for the info. -- (N.DG) "If all else fails – at least try and look under control." --
skydivejersey 0 #5 August 7, 2003 I am no expert hear but I thought strobes were a bad idea because they fuck up your night vision.
Amazon 7 #6 August 7, 2003 Strap it to your lower leg.. that way you can turn it on when you get under canopy... but it will be out of your direct line of sight.... to prevent killing your night vision..... obviously you want to close your eyes when you turn it on. usskydiver 0 #7 August 7, 2003 Our SOP for military night jumps (and we tend to use these at Raeford because they make total sense)is: Red chem light on chest strap or main lift web. Green chem light on back of rig. White strobe on helmet. Chem light on altimeter. Rationale: If you see red it's oncoming traffic and it's time to turn right. If you see green you may follow that traffic (with caution). I like my strobe pointing up because it illuminates the canopy without interfering with my night vision. Don't be cheap on the strobe, they will last for years and have multiple applications. Tim Maggot
DaMan 0 #8 August 8, 2003 Left lateral works really well (as long as it points down)... There was one person on my first night jump that had the thing flashing him for about 30 seconds before he got it turned around! Z-Flock 8 Discotec Rodriguez Too bad weapons grade stupidity doesn't lead to sterility.
