Slink2 0 #1 February 6, 2003 I recently watched the Guy Manos movie "Cut Away" and I'm wondering if there are actual speed star teams out there. (Anyone know if Tom Berenger and Stephen Baldwin continued jumping after completion of the movie?).
skygod7777 0 #2 February 6, 2003 yes there are. but in that movie they had 8 way speed star team, and now it's 10 way, and i also don't think the only build big rounds (or stars) any more. later

It's always been 10 way. They build several different formations besides stars in competition now. It's majorly fun to do no hold, no show speed star exits. quade 4 #4 February 6, 2003 10-way speed is a real event at the U.S. Nationals. 8-way speed is not.10-way at Nationals is more than just a star (aka Big F'ing Round), but there are smaller local competitions that are still being played by the rules of years gone by. The oldest 10-way competition is the "Rumbleseat Meet" held each year at Perris.I'm almost certain John Kallend is going to pipe in here at some point and tell you all about how it's done at the Nationals level. quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Dumpster 0 #6 February 6, 2003 We did a little 10 stuff at Sky Knights last year, when we had the Otter on Tuesdays- I was there twice- It was a blast, even though most of the time it funneled. Lots of fun! We'll have a Super Twotter this coming season, hopefully we'll do more. Easy Does It
Slink2 0 #7 February 6, 2003 Hey Lenny, I looked at your profile and I see your from Troy, WI. I believe I made two AFF jumps (Level 8-9) with an AFF instructor from your dz at Quincy 2001. Perhaps not a legal exit for competition. Dave
 darkwing 5 #12 February 6, 2003 I'm an old timer, and I remember the original 10-way speed stuff, and recently have dabbled in the current version, which I like immensely. We are going to practice it about every third weekend at our DZ. It adds a little variety to our routine of 4-way practice. (which I also remember from the old days.) I was surprised at the reception 10-way got at my dz late last fall. I'm glad to see a resurgence of interest in it, as I have always remembered it fondly. It is even common for us to do 10-way speed type exits when we aren't doing 10-way speed. More flying for everyone. Interesting "speed" exit movie. That method wouldn't have occurred to me. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
 happythoughts 0 #13 February 6, 2003 10-speed is kind of a Thanksgiving boogie standard. My personal favorite is 10-way speed out of a DC-3. No-show, no-grip exits mean a lot of fun flying. The reasons cutaway used 8 people are finances and script. Having that many "main" characters would be confusing for the audience to follow. It would also mean developing identities for two more unique characters . All the characters who played the team are working actors and were paid a lot more. The rest of the cast were "extras".
