sfc 1 #1 February 4, 2003 I recently had a hole wear in my jump suit on the inside elbow, and had to tape it to stop it spreading. I taped it up with gaffers tape. Trouble was it came off in two jumps, even though we taped from the inside and outside of the suit. I found a role of duct tape and did the same thing, it lasted the whole weekend, 9 jumps and looks likeit will go for more. I thought gaffers tape was the shit, but after this I think I have to change over to duct. Much stickier and more flexible. Does anyone know why gaffers tape is prefered by jumpers? Rdutch 0 #2 February 4, 2003 Gaffers tape it isn't exactly stronger than duct tape in a way. Gaffer's tape is so good because it is clean. If you remove duct tape it leaves a sticky mess all over where it was. Also gaffers tape needs to be activated in a way. when you take it off the roll it really isnt sticky but if you rub it to heat it up, once it has been applied it will stick a lot better Ray Small and fast what every girl dreams of! riggerrob 643 #4 February 4, 2003 Back in the good old days, we used to patch T-10s with duct tape so we could do an extra couple thousand jumps.
joshjumps 0 #5 February 4, 2003 gaffe tape is best for camera type gear because it will not leave any residue (unless left on for a long time) In your case duct tape worked because of it's serious stickiness. Also in addition to what Ray said about activating Gaffe tape, humidity also plays a huge part in applying it. Always apply your gaffe tape in a low humidity environment. blues, josh
lukepinion 0 #6 February 4, 2003 Do you not want to sew a patch on? I would think that would work the best and it might even look cool if you find a good patch to sew on to it. Luke *living life to the fullest*
sfc 1 #7 February 5, 2003 it's getting so thin I don't think it would take a patch, I had a repair on the leg cuff and a new hole appeared next to the new material. It is time for it to be retired as soon as I have the $$$, the duct tape is just going to hold it until then. Shame about the gaffers tape, I found a white roll and it matched my jump suit, the duct tape is just grey and stands out.
Clownburner 0 #8 February 10, 2003 Depends on the job. Duct tape is better for repairs that need to be air/water-resistent or semi-permanent. Gaffers for everything else, because as others have said before, it's clean. That's the whole point of it. Gaffers is better for anything that's going to get hot though, because the duct tape adhesive gets gooey and starts slipping around 130 degrees. Gaffers can get heated much hotter than that, and it gets brittle but doesn't 'melt' and leave gooey slime that won't come off.7CP#1 | BTR#2 | Payaso en fuego Rodriguez "I want hot chicks in my boobies!"- McBeth
