dayle 0 #1 February 19, 2003 Hello Everyone!!! Well I've had enough of the sub zero temperatures here in Toronto and I will be driving down to Florida around March 7-8 and flying back sometime the next week. I'll be in the Ft. Lauderdale area and my question is where is there to jump around there. I don't mind doing some driving to get to a DZ. I would especially be interested in a Canopy Control Course if there may be one available. I really appreciate everyone's help. thanks
ojf1982 0 #2 February 19, 2003 Come to Skydive Miami, its about 45 minutes from Ft. Lauderdale. The edge ... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who know where it is are those that have gone over - Hunter S. Thompson
Stacy 0 #3 February 19, 2003 Fort Lauderdale... your closest choices are Skydive America (Pahokee, with Scotty and Tami Carbone, great people!) and Skydive Miami. I think SDA has more of a night scene, they have a bar, grill, bunkhouse, etc. SDA (Otter) is about an hour and 15 mins from ft lauderdale, SD MIami (Caravan) is a bit further if i remember correctly. Sebastian is about 2 hours up 95. it's an easy drive. They have caravans/otters/skyvan depending on the weekend. As for a canopy control, Deland has an "official" canopy school. that's a good 4.5 hour drive up the coastline though from FL. it's up near daytona. I"m sure if you call sebastian, SDA, etc they may have coaches available, just not "official." have fun, it's BEAUTIFUL down here now!!!
highfly 0 #4 February 19, 2003 Hi there Dale. If you fancy Sebastian, check out Chris Lynch. He's an english dude who comes back to the UK regulary to teach cc classes. Have a look at Skydive mag and search for " Be a pilot and not a passenger" Heres his email address. chris@freeflytrainingcenter.com www.myspace.com/durtymac
dayle 0 #5 February 20, 2003 Thanks alot Stacy, but since I'll be driving down, I can always stop at a dropzone that is further north on the way down. This pretty much leaves all of Florida open to me. I just have to end up in Ft Lauderdale sometime between the 11th and 15th. Anybody else have anymore sudgestions?? Ron 10 #7 February 20, 2003 There are several DZ's around TPA. Zhills is the closest they have 5 otters and a porter, a new larger swoop pond, and meLake Wales is about an hr away, and at last check had an otter, and a CASA. There is a DZ in Wachula that is open Sundays only, but they sometimes do beach jumps. DeLand is about 1.5ish hrs away. Wiliston is around 2hrs north. I hear they have, or are getting a Caravan. I'd go to Zhills. Ron "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers,
PhreeZone 20 #8 February 20, 2003 What will Z-hills have this summer? I don't think they will have 5 Otters all Summer will they? Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Watcher 0 #9 February 20, 2003 When we showed up last summer it was 2 or 3. I really liked the DZ personally more so than Lake Wales and Titusville. Sebastion is where I think it would be fun to play, while train at Deland, but could easily be at ZHills all the time.Jonathan Bartlett D-24876 AFF-I
skymama 37 #10 February 20, 2003 Go to Z-hills. It's close by, a fun dz, yet some very experienced and knowledgeable people jump there. I think they'll take good care of you. skymama 37 #12 February 20, 2003 Z-hills isn't my home dz, so I'm not too sure about your questions. But, here's a link to the Z-hills website: http://www.skydivecity.com/ If you're really serious about canopy control classes, you can't get any better than Scott Miller in Deland. I've taken his class twice, and he does a supurb job. He is a test jumper at PD, and is on the Pro Swoop Tour. He knows his stuff about canopies, and he has an excellent way of teaching. His classes are very affordable too. It's $25 a jump (hop-n-pop so you have the air to yourself), and that includes his instruction, video and your plane ride. kallend 2,147 #13 February 20, 2003 I've been to a number of Florida DZs as a winter pilgrim from the frozen north. Without a doubt, Z-Hills was the most visitor-friendly to someone visiting alone. If you're with your team or a bunch of m8s, I don't suppose it matters so much.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
