What's going on in this picture

Recommended Posts

A few days back somebody posted a link to a flash/shockwave skydiving game. The link went to a page in a language I don't speak (Danish???) and the following photo was on the page. Anybody want to speculate on why the pilot chute appears in front of the landing jumper ? ? ?

There seems to be tension moving the jumper forward, from the position of the p/c and the canopy, not to mention his body... but I don't know enough about the dynamics of that kind of thing to actually say for sure.

'Twould be interesting to know...

Hooks right on that being a drougue for towing gliders and paragliders up. I'm betting some one grabbed what looks to be something like an old 9 cell and decided the clouds were too low to jump, but getting towed up to a few hundred feet would be cool.

I think that is a drogue attached to the tow cable, so that the cable doesn't slam back on the ground. They use them for towing gliders aloft.

Yes, here's a picture. The parachute will actually
blow the rope back to near the starting point in a wind.
On the parachutist he must make sure to pull the correct cutaway handle;)

Phree,

I'm pretty sure that's a ParaFoil accutacy canopy .. and it would be as big or bigger than a Manta 288 - our DZO has an old one that I've seen flown once.

WE also have military cadet glider ops on DZ and yes, that sure looks like what's happening.

The scary part is tha those rope tows move at a pretty fast pace - the one used here is powered by a big block chev with a muncie 4 speed ... and apparentlythey use the higher gears! :S:S and are towed to about a grand

It reminds me of some people who came to our DZ a few years ago, and one of the days was cloudy. They took a pick-up truck to the runway, attached someone's chest strap to a rope and attempted to haul this person slowly under canopy. 2 others held the ends of the canopy until the parachutist could speed up.

He became somewhat airborne, landed on his front the first time and on his butt the second time. They packed it in as the DZO was about to go out and ask them to stop, since it loked unsafe.

I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. I keep falling out the door of the plane.

There's a few people on my club who practice precision landing for a sport. over a 1000 jumps each, mostly hop& pops trying to hit a target the size of a dime....not my sport...but anyways...

To spare money, they spent a couple of holidays doing towed landings/lifts.

The cable would get them to 750/1000ft, they'd unhook, land and be back up again (no packing involved) and do 20 to 30 'jumps' per day.
The only funny thing is that it doesn't count as a parachute jump (since you don't jump from an aircraft, and the parachute is not closed in the container while jumping) so it's just paragliding...or something like that..

So...to say in a few words what took me a whole essay...it's done quite often as 'cheep and fast' training

If you check the first picture you'll notice the sexy tights most PA people wear on 'jumps' like this..

it was done here in slovenia too... it's the cheapest way to train for accuracy... and it even works... but as in any onther skydiving related activity, one should be very carefull!!!!!

It's a para-foil...like the one we used down in Sparta, Illinois in the 80's...
Bad weather...quick tow to 600ft and release...free shot at the target!

All in good fun..until we pulled someone into the tower...oops![:/]

That cut the fun time! Something about interfearing with airport operations:(

YIKES!!!! Looks like the drogue is wrapped around his neck, pulling him in to land. Good thing the jumper knows what he/she is doing, adjusting with rear risers and not making more tnetion with the toggles...that definitely has potential!!!

I did that once in a glider in Denmark, what a HOOT!!
It's kinda like being shot off a carrier deck! I was told they were using an old 455 cubic inch Oldsmobile engine to power the winch. After they disconnect the cable it just floats down.
